This is an analytical account of a colorful period in Russian history, which is accessible to undergraduates of European and Russian history, as well as to the nonspecialist reader. Central to a discussion that emphasizes Russia's place in Europe are the much misunderstood personalities of some remarkable rulers, such as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Alexander I. Their reigns are set in the context of wider developments in social, economic, cultural and intellectual history that help to account for Russia's emergence as a great power.

How are heros made and how do they become legends? This book tells the story of one hero, Medal of Honor winner Sergeant Alvin C. York of Tennessee, by tracing the development of his story in the American press from first mention of his Argonne feat in WW I to his death in 1964. A fascinating read even for those who think they know every detail of York's story.

Good Reading
By patricia johnson
Well organized and since he was my Great Uncle (married my Grandfather's sister), I fell qualified to comment about his life. I appreciated her approach to her subject and enjoyed reading the various newspaper coverage. The world appreciated hero's then much more then today. Being in service has never been easy, and sadly, not appreciated as much as it should be in our Country.

Basic Japanese: Learn to Speak Everyday Japanese in 10 Carefully Structured Lessons (MP3 Audio CD Included), by Samuel E. Martin, Eriko Sa

Basic Japanese takes a friendly and innovative approach to beginner Japanese, emphasizing the structure of the Japanese language rather than just vocabulary.

This method was pioneered by the author, Samuel E. Martin. Once considered controversial, modern linguists now agree that the structural based approach for leaning a language allows for more effective retention than the traditional repetition-based approach. It is especially effective for self–study and first–time learners as well as in a classroom setting. The MP3 Audio–CD helps to reinforce pronunciation and build listening comprehension.

Each lesson is set up to ease learners into not just understanding new material but mastering it, using a four-step method:

  • Step 1: Basic Sentences: Each lesson begins with the key to quick mastery of spoken Japanese—learning and understanding new sentence patterns. Vocabulary is learned in context. A Basic Vocabulary section lists only essential words and phrases that are relevant to the theme of the lesson.
  • Step 2: Structure Notes: Next the learner is guided through complete, in-depth explanations of the sentences' grammar essentials, to aid in mastering the sentence patterns.
  • Step 3: Conversation: Authentic dialogue teaches the way people naturally speak, putting into practice the lesson's sentence patterns with common, everyday topics.
  • Step 4: Exercises: An opportunity for practicing—and for strengthening your understanding of the lesson's key points and ability to read Japanese.

Accomplished teacher Eriko Sato has produced an excellent revision of Samuel Martin's classic text for the classroom and self-learners wishing to learn Japanese, while remaining true to Martin's voice and teaching style. Together they make the challenge of learning Japanese at once manageable, practical, and fun.

Review
"This book excels at differentiating really similar concepts, even adding more to the never-ending question of 'What is the difference between [this character] and [this character]?' The vocabulary words are also thematically arranged, usually with illustrations for some words for better memory reinforcement. Pronunciation in the CD tracks actually sounds natural compared to other learning materials" —Japan Reference blog

Don't pass up a great book, on one error...
By Kumiho Nogitsune
Yes Usagi うさぎ - Rabbit is misspelled as Usage. But Kuruma 車 does mean car - it can also be used to refer to wagon, even a jinriksha ... almost any type of wheeled vehicle. Overall this book is one of the few Japanese instructional aids that is not written in only romanization. It uses Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, etc from the very beginning. The exercises are well done and the grammar notes are exceedingly rich. I highly recommend taking the time to read the pronunciation guide in the beginning as it helps eliminate some common bad habits english speakers fall prey to, It certainly corrected some of mine. The charts are well organized and a great study source. The dictionary could be more complete for this edition but it is always recommended to get a good dictionary for any language study, I recommend Kodansha's Furigana dictionary for beginners. Hopefully the above noted correction will be found in any further editions of this book. It's a shame to pass up a good book on one error.

Well-done But More Than Basic
By James J Ball
This is in preparation for any upcoming, extended, independent trip to Japan. With my modest functional working knowledge of Japanese, this has been very helpful. However, I would call it more advanced than Basic. It is well presented and thoughtfully organized. For me, this has worked out very well. It's a keeper.

Great Introduction to Japanese
By John
Basic Japanese is a pretty solid product. It does a wonderful job teaching the basics on pronunciation and grammar usage. There are a few errors such as Rabbit being misspelled Usage instead of Usagi and Farmer being translated as Hyaku (which is One Hundred). Though the word farmer has hyaku within it so I could see why the proof readers might have missed it.

In any case, the errors aside, it truly is a great tool for beginners. The lessons are easy to follow along with and the cd that corresponds with the lessons is a nice addition to hear pronunciations correctly. I would certainly recommend this book to start with.

Building on the successful formula of the first edition, Martin Tove offers a concise but detailed account of how the visual system is organised and functions to produce visual perception. He takes his readers from first principles; the structure and function of the eye and what happens when light enters, to how we see and process images, recognise patterns and faces, and through to the most recent discoveries in molecular genetics and brain imaging, and how they have uncovered a host of new advances in our understanding of how visual information is processed within the brain. Incorporating new material throughout, including almost 50 new images, every chapter has been updated to include the latest research, and culminates in helpful key points, which summarise the lessons learnt. This book is an invaluable course text for students within the fields of psychology, neuroscience, biology and physiology.

Pretty good overview of the visual system, although I have seen better explanations in a neural physiology book.

A VERY GOOD introduction to the visual system
By Adam Ginton
For what it claims it is, namely, "an introduction," Tovee's book provides a comprehensive, clear, and easy-to-understand tour through the start to end of our visual system.

Overall, if you are looking for an informative, yet entertaining as opposed to overly pedagogical introduction into how our visual system works, this is the book to go with. The manner it goes about teaching is lucid and easy to follow; it begins with any preliminary explanations before moving onto the successive topic, starting with how light and the eye works (actually how we can know all these things) up to how the brain processes information and the consequential effects. Thus, the reader should not feel as there are any major gaps in his understanding of the material. With that said, this is just an introduction, and so as opposed to a college textbook, which tries to explain as much as possible about as much as possible, this book sticks to the more general ideas. For example, it does explain the general structure of cells and photoreceptors, but as opposed to some college textbooks I've read, it doesn't go into the atomic or genetic explanation of how everything is made (it does mention the major proteins that are used but only in name and general function). The essential details are mentioned, as well as the essential details in explaining the essential details. Or in another way of putting it, all the essential details to neuroscience are mentioned. Further, the language and tone is casual and easy-to-approach; Tovee does not merely regurgitate facts and expect you to memorize them all. Rather, he always gives clear examples of what something means and entails. Thus every idea becomes easily conceptual to understand.

The book follows a logical progression of how our visual experience works:
1. It beneficially begins by giving an account of the analysis methods we have used to determine all this information, that is, it lets you know how and why we know what we know. It also gives a very brief, overall picture of the gross anatomical structures of the brain.
2. Gross anatomy of the eye and what parts do what. It also mentions related phenomena to the subject, such as what eye-disorders happen if something goes wrong.
3. The genetics and theories of colour vision - how and why we can see.
4. An overview of the major parts of the visual system in the brain and what each area generally does, as well as how the areas function and communicate with each other and overall.
5. A more detailed description of the Primary Visual Cortex.
6. Visual Development - the biological effects of various nurturing scenarios.
7. The Colour constancy problem - what it is, possible explanations, and possible repercussions
8. Object Perception and recognition - from the technical details of the image on the retina to how it is processed/encoded by the cells and brain areas. Also related subtopics and problems under object perception
9. Facial recognition - why it is particularly important and how it works.
10. Motion perception
11. Brain and Space - the makeup/constituents of a visual image
12. A summary of it all, as well as more repercussions/problems still faced
Further, each chapter has a very concise summary of the key points.

Although there are lucid, easily-conceptual explanations of phenomena, not many details are overly emphasized, whether or not they are particularly important. That is, the author mentions them once in a thorough account, but does not mention the particular importance of a subject. For example, the idea of ocular dominance is mentioned only briefly, despite the larger importance of such a theory. Still, one has to give credit in the authors illuminating explanation of not just technical anatomy but also discussion of the related-phenomena of something. For example, he devotes several pages to describing the mechanics and effects of monocular/binocular deprivation. In making topics relatable, there are many interesting studies mentioned and the important consequential ideas of such studies. For example, in chapter 2 it is mentioned that one suggestion as to why we do not notice our blinks is that visual perception is suppressed during a blink. The author continues, "Evidence for this suggestion comes from an ingenious experiment by Volkman and his colleagues. The eyes lie directly above the roof of the mouth, and a bright light shone on the roof will stimulate the retina whether or not the eyes are closed. Volkman found that the light intensity required to stimulate the retina during a blink is five times greater than at any other time, strongly suggesting that there is suppression of perception during blinking." Most helpfully, the author in bringing up a new topic first gives the general definition of something, then what it means in more exact ideas, and then the technical reasons for why it happens, and finally implications and/or problems that arise. For example, on p. 39, "In 1802, Thomas Young correctly proposed that the human eye detected different colours because it contained three types of receptor, each sensitive to a particular hue. His theory was reffered to as the trichromatic (three colour) theory. It suggested that for a human observer any colour could be reproduced by various quantities of three colours selected from various points in the spectrum, such as red green, and blue. However, it has long been thought that there are four primary colours: red, green, blue, and yellow." He then goes on to a more thorough explanation of these theories. The pages are filled with illuminating diagrams of the important details just described. I personally find these sorts of diagrams more helpful/informative than just a photo taken from real life, as the labels are very helpful to me, although there are NO actual pictures taken from real life in the book. What I like most is the flow of ideas mentioned, especially in introducing an idea. For example, "the P pathway [with information about colour and shape] splits to produce two new pathways in the upper layers of V1. One pathway seems to deal primarily with colour and this is called the P-B pathway," which is followed by a more detailed description of the pathways.

I would say this is a must-have for anyone interested in neuroscience and the visual system at any level. Whether for the dilettante who wants to have a general yet comprehensive understanding of how our visual experience works, to the student who needs a concise conceptualization of things, to anyone who wants to just reinforce this material. This book is best read in a chronological manner, as topics don't necessarily build off one another (as in, you need to have read the preceding information to understand the current information), but rather just flawlessly follows from one another. By reading in this manner, it is easier to see the function and importance of a topic. However, one can turn to any page and get a helpful understanding of something (for example, upon turning to a random page, I read, "Althouh many neurons in V1 do respond to lines and bars, the optimal stimulus is a sine-wave grating (De Valois, Albrecht & Thorell, 1978). A sine-wave grating looks like a series of fuzzy, unfocused parallel bars. Along any line perpendicular to the long axis of the grating, the brightness varies according to a sine-wave fuction."). Plus, at only 179 pages, with many pictures in between, it is a pleasantly short, easy-to-read book.

An Excellent Overview of Sight
By Martin A. Gantt
An Introduction to the Visual System was exactly as advertised. The relatively quick read provides an overview of the entire visual system of the brain. The book begins with a detailed description of the physiology of the eyes and the relevant physical and biochemical functional structures. The optical physics and photochemistry are glossed over in favor of giving the reader a slightly broader systems view of the eyes. Color vision is discussed in detail discussing the way three types of human cones allow for color vision. The biochemical properties of photopigments are glossed over in favor of a broader perspective. The evolutionary basis of color vision and problems arising in color defects are briefly explained.
The text next discusses the organization of the visual system in a very broad sense. Cortical localization and the anatomy of visual organization are discussed with emphasis on the primary visual cortex. The modular organization of the primary visual cortex is emphasized, discussing cortical receptive fields, color vision, directionality, texture, based on the modular organization of the primary visual cortex.
The remainder of the text discusses higher level visual functions. Development of the neural system is discussed in detail citing numerous animal studies of monocular and binocular deprivation. A chapter is devoted to the complex task of maintaining color constancy. Various studies are cited demonstrating the very complex nature of organizing a system of cortical neurons, some wavelength dependent and others "color context" dependent in order to use color recognition of objects for our benefit.
The higher level brain functions of object perception and recognition and motion were especially fascinating. Citing various studies the author seems to suggest that complex higher cortical regions of the brain have large cortical receptive fields that integrate lower level cortical processing to respond to specific types of objects. "It has been suggested that the simple shapes coded for by the elaborate cells can form a `visual alphabet' from which a representation of an object can be constructed" (p.130). This proposition has tremendous implications for the study of visual perception if not consciousness itself.
The discussion of motion processing the visual system in equally engrossing. The techniques of saccades, (rapid movement of the eye) stereoscoping (using differences in each eyes perception to create depth perception) and the organization of directional modularity in the V5 section of the brain provide neural basis for generating what the author refers to as "The illusion of continuity".
An entire chapter is devoted the perception of the face. A seemingly trivial matter, the author explains through the use of PET scan and fMRI evidence that the primate brain really has sections and pathways devoted towards face recognition. The evolutionary significance of face recognition is briefly but effectively explained.
The book ends a discussion of how the brain is able to integrate the multitude of complex processes into image formation. Neural oscillation and temporal binding theory are discussed , although the author seems to personally favor a more hierarchal organizing model.
Overall the book is an excellent read for anyone interested in neuroscience, optics, or medicine. The book doesn't get bogged down in technical details in is very concise. Most of the information and claims presentation and supported with a plethora of references to neuroscience experiments. Perhaps best of all each chapter ends with a bullet point summary of the key concepts. I highly recommend this book.

Is what it is...
By JayDubya
This is your typical IFSTA manual that is as exciting to read as a phone book. I independently read this book along with four others for a promotional exam. Aside from the fact that it is bone dry, it is easy to comprehend which allowed me to recall the information needed for the exam. Again, not exciting but the facts are there for those who want to learn about this topic.

A NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST

A major book about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes

Over the last half-billion years, there have been Five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. This time around, the cataclysm is us. In prose that is at once frank, entertaining, and deeply informed, New Yorker writer Elizabeth Kolbert tells us why and how human beings have altered life on the planet in a way no species has before. Interweaving research in half a dozen disciplines, descriptions of the fascinating species that have already been lost, and the history of extinction as a concept, Kolbert provides a moving and comprehensive account of the disappearances occurring before our very eyes. She shows that the sixth extinction is likely to be mankind's most lasting legacy, compelling us to rethink the fundamental question of what it means to be human.

*Starred Review* It didn’t take long for Homo sapiens to begin “reassembling the biosphere,” observes Kolbert, a Heinz Award–winning New Yorker staff writer and author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change (2006). By burning fossil fuels, we are rapidly changing the atmosphere, the oceans, and the climate, forcing potentially millions of species into extinction. Five watershed events in the deep past decimated life on earth, hence the designation “Sixth Extinction” for today’s human-propelled crisis. To lay the groundwork for understanding this massive die-off, Kolbert crisply tells the stories of such earlier losses as the American mastodon and the great auk and provides an orienting overview of evolutionary and ecological science. She then chronicles her adventures in the field with biologists, botanists, and geologists investigating the threats against amphibians, bats, coral, and rhinos. Intrepid and astute, Kolbert combines vivid, informed, and awestruck descriptions of natural wonders, from rain forests to the Great Barrier Reef, and wryly amusing tales about such dicey situations as nearly grabbing onto a tree branch harboring a fist-sized tarantula, swimming among poisonous jellyfish, and venturing into a bat cave; each dispatch is laced with running explanations of urgent scientific inquiries and disquieting findings. Rendered with rare, resolute, and resounding clarity, Kolbert’s compelling and enlightening report forthrightly addresses the most significant topic of our lives. --Donna Seaman

Review

"[The Sixth Extinction] is a wonderful book, and it makes very clear that big, abrupt changes can happen; they're not outside the realm of possibility. They have happened before, they can happen again." ―President Barack Obama

“Riveting . . . It is not possible to overstate the importance of Kolbert's book.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

“Arresting . . . Ms. Kolbert shows in these pages that she can write with elegiac poetry about the vanishing creatures of this planet, but the real power of her book resides in the hard science and historical context she delivers here, documenting the mounting losses that human beings are leaving in their wake.” ―The New York Times

“Surprisingly breezy, entirely engrossing, and frequently entertaining . . . Kolbert is a masterful, thought-provoking reporter.” ―The Boston Globe

“Your view of the world will be fundamentally changed. . . . Kolbert is an astute observer, excellent explainer, and superb synthesizer, and even manages to find humor in her subject matter.” ―The Seattle Times

“Powerful . . . An invaluable contribution to our understanding.” ―Al Gore, The New York Times Book Review

“Natural scientists posit that there have been five extinction events in the Earth's history (think of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs), and Kolbert makes a compelling case that human activity is leading to the sixth.” ―Bill Gates

“[Kolbert] makes a page-turner out of even the most sober and scientifically demanding aspects of extinction.” ―New York Magazine

“Ms. Kolbert's lively account is thought-provoking.” ―The Wall Street Journal

“[Kolbert] grounds her stories in rigorous science and memorable characters past and present, building a case that a mass extinction is underway, whether we want to admit it or not.” ―Discover Magazine

“Throughout her extensive and passionately collected research, Kolbert offers a highly readable, enlightening report on the global and historical impact of humans . . . a highly significant eye-opener rich in facts and enjoyment.” ―Kirkus (starred review)

“The factoids Kolbert tosses off about nature's incredible variety--a frog that carries eggs in its stomach and gives birth through its mouth, a wood stork that cools off by defecating on its own legs--makes it heartbreakingly clear, without any heavy-handed sermonizing from the author, just how much we lose when an animal goes extinct. In the same way, her intrepid reporting from far-off places--Panama, Iceland, Italy, Scotland, Peru, the Amazonian rain forest of Brazil, and the remote one tree Island, off the coast of Australia--gives us a sense of the earth's vastness and beauty.” ―Bookforum

“Kolbert accomplishes an amazing feat in her latest book, which superbly blends the depressing facts associated with rampant species extinctions and impending ecosystem collapse with stellar writing to produce a text that is accessible, witty, scientifically accurate, and impossible to put down.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Rendered with rare, resolute, and resounding clarity, Kolbert's compelling and enlightening report forthrightly addresses the most significant topic of our lives.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“An epic, riveting story of our species that reads like a scientific thriller--only more terrifying because it is real. Like Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Elizabeth Kolbert's The Sixth Extinction is destined to become one of the most important and defining books of our time.” ―David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z

“I tore through Elizabeth Kolbert's The Sixth Extinction with a mix of awe and terror. Her long view of extinction excited my joy in life's diversity -- even as she made me aware how many species are currently at risk.” ―Dava Sobel, author of Longitude and Galileo's Daughter

“With her usual lucid and lovely prose, Elizabeth Kolbert lays out the sad and gripping facts of our moment on earth: that we've become a geological force, driving vast swaths of creation over the brink. A remarkable addition to the literature of our haunted epoch.” ―Bill McKibben, author Oil and Honey: The Education of an Unlikely Activist

“Elizabeth Kolbert's cautionary tale, The Sixth Extinction, offers us a cogent overview of a harrowing biological challenge. The reporting is exceptional, the contextualizing exemplary. Kolbert stands at the forefront of what it means to be a socially responsible American writer today.” ―Barry Lopez, author of Arctic Dreams

“The sixth mass extinction is the biggest story on Earth, period, and Elizabeth Kolbert tells it with imagination, rigor, deep reporting, and a capacious curiosity about all the wondrous creatures and ecosystems that exist, or have existed, on our planet. The result is an important book full of love and loss.” ―David Quammen, author of The Song of the Dodo and Spillover

“Elizabeth Kolbert writes with an aching beauty of the impact of our species on all the other forms of life known in this cold universe. The perspective is at once awe-inspiring, humbling and deeply necessary.” ―T.C. Boyle, author of San Miguel

A Clarion Call for Ending the Current Mass Extinction
By John Kwok
As a former invertebrate paleobiologist, "The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History" is the book I have been waiting for years to be written. It is a clarion call for ending the current mass extinction that we humans are causing, and a book that should be, according to Scientific American, "this era's galvanizing text", worthy of comparison with Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". It is also a vastly superior popular science book than last year's "Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction" written by IO9 science editor Annalee Newitz, simply because Elizabeth Kolbert, a staff writer at The New Yorker, has done a superlative job in science reporting, accurately reporting and interpreting work done by some of the most notable researchers of our time studying mass extinctions, whether it is research from Berkeley vertebrate paleobiologist Anthony Barnosky (The lead author of a 2011 Nature paper estimating that current extinction rates are equivalent to those of the five great mass extinctions recognized from the fossil record; the terminal Ordovician, terminal Permian, terminal Triassic and the terminal Cretaceous; the latter in which non-avian dinosaurs became extinct.) or American Museum of Natural History curator of invertebrate paleontology Neil Landman, a noted researcher of Cretaceous ammonites, or evolutionary geneticist and anthropologist Svante Paabo, whose team is sequencing the entire Neanderthal genome and recognized the existence of another late Pleistocene hominid species, the Denisovans, from genomic material in a fragment of a finger bone found in a Siberian cave. What Kolbert has written is a spellbinding work of science journalism worthy of comparison with David Quammen's "The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions", and one that belongs on the bookshelves of anyone interested in science, and especially those who may not grasp the full extent of the ongoing mass extinction being caused by us, humanity. Moreover, at the end of her book, she provides an extensive bibliography which notes many of the most important relevant scientific papers as well as important texts written by the likes of notable ecologists James H. Brown and Michael Rosenzweig, and paleobiologists Michael Benton, Douglas Erwin and Richard Fortey. Without question, "The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History", may be one of the most discussed, most important, books of popular science published this year.

In her opening chapter, "The Sixth Extinction", in prose that is hauntingly beautiful and poignant, Kolbert cites the disappearance of Panamanian frogs and toads as one emblematic of the ongoing crisis in biodiversity, noting that of all the major groups of terrestrial vertebrates, amphibians are the ones which are most rapidly going extinct before our very eyes. She uses the discoveries of fossil mastodons and mammoths in North America and Europe in the 18th and early 19th Centuries in the second chapter ("The Mastodon's Molars") to introduce readers to the great French naturalist Georges Cuvier who was the first to recognize the existence of extinct species and the likelihood that they died during great cataclysms in Earth's history. Her third chapter, "The Original Penguin", is an especially lucid account of British geologist Charles Lyell's uniformitarian view of Earth's history, and how that inspired Charles Darwin's thinking, not only in geology, but especially, in his conception of the Theory of Evolution via Natural Selection, while describing the rapid extinction of the Great Auk - which was the first bird to be dubbed a "penguin" - in the North Atlantic Ocean along the northernmost coast of North America and Iceland. In the fourth chapter, "The Luck of the Ammonites", she offers an especially lucid account of geologist Walter Alvarez's discovery of the iridium-rich clay at the end of the Cretaceous, leading to the development of the asteroid impact theory for the Cretaceous mass extinction, while also discussing work by such notable invertebrate paleontologists as David Jablonski, David Raup, Jack Sepkoski, and Neil Landman, in noting how the Cretaceous mass extinction that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs, ammonites and other notable terrestrial and marine organisms, was simply a case of bad luck, which she emphasizes further in describing the probable causes for the terminal Ordovician and terminal Permian mass extinctions (Chapter V).

Kolbert devotes two chapters (Chapters VI and VII) to the ongoing "experiment" humanity is performing on the world's oceans, ocean acidification, caused by an excessive increase in carbon dioxide being dumped into them, and noting that it was a likely cause for several of the mass extinctions known from the fossil record. I must commend her for an excellent discussion of the species-area curve known for decades by ecologists, especially through the important research by E. O. Wilson and his colleague Robert MacArthur in the early 1960s (Chapter VIII), as a means of understanding habitat fragmentation (Chapter IX) as a major contributing factor in determining a species' prospects for survival. There are also excellent discussions on how human activity has fostered the unexpected dispersal of animals and plants, creating, in essence a "New Pangea" (Chapter X), that has only accelerated the tempo of the ongoing mass extinction, and the "Pleistocene Overkill" hypothesis (Chapter XI) proposed by geologist Paul S. Martin that has been confirmed, in spectacular fashion, by palynological (fossilized pollen and spores) data from Australia and North America. She describes the extinction of Neanderthals as another, much earlier, example of human-driven extinction (Chapter XII) relying on the notable research by Svante Paabo and his team, noting the importance of the "Out of Africa" theory in explaining Homo sapiens' global dispersal, while also discussing Paabo's "leaky-replacement" hypothesis that accounts for Neanderthals' eventual replacement by Homo sapiens through interbreeding, resulting in hybrids whose descendants include all non-African populations of humanity, contributing between 1 and 4 percent within the genomes of non-African populations, remnants of the Neanderthal genome. In the concluding chapter (Chapter XIII), Kolbert acknowledges she has been amassing evidence demonstrating why the current mass extinction exists, and warning us that "...we are deciding, without quite meaning to, which evolutionary pathways will remain open and which will forever be closed. No other creature has ever managed this, and it will, unfortunately, be our most enduring legacy."

Like Looking In A Mirror, But Failing To See The Image
By Frederick S. Goethel
From the title of this book, it would be easy to imagine that it was another science writer creating a book about climate change and attributing our future to that singular event. On the contrary, Elizabeth Kolbert has shown, through a number of examples, how we are destroying our environment and possible ourselves in the process.

Kolbert begins by going through the past five extinctions and explaining what is known of them and how they came about, as well as what organisms were present during each of them that eventually were wiped out. She then travels around the world to look at a number of ways in which we humans are causing the death and destruction of our current environment. That ranges from acidification of the oceans from excessive carbon dioxide levels to clear cutting of forests and to our unwitting transfer of invasive species around the globe on a regular and frequent basis.

This book is a wakeup call for all humans. In one way or another, we are all working to end the existence of numerous species and possibly our own. We may possibly be too smart for our own good. A quote from near the end of the book is certainly a message that is cause for us all to ponder! " If you want to think about why humans are so dangerous to other species, you can picture a poacher in Africa carrying an AK-47 or a logger in the Amazon gripping an ax, or, better still, you can picture yourself, holding a book on your lap."

Kolbert writes with the non-scientific individual in mind and makes even the most difficult subjects easy to understand. As I said above, we are looking in a mirror and failing to see the destruction we are creating. Kolbert makes us look at that image. This book is fascinating and thought provoking and very much well worth the price!

Great as far as it goes; but insufficient coverage of the current mass extinction event
By Michael Heath
"The Sixth Extinction" is one of many fundamentally flawed books on climate change; yet I still recommend people read this book. That's because of the dearth of well-done climate change books coupled to the importance of developing public literacy on climate change.

You would think that perhaps humanity's greatest contemporaneous threat would result in too many great books to feasibly read. E.g., consider all the great books published around 2009 honoring 150 years since Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species". I read seven in that period. Yet with climate change we too often suffer through the amateurish (Overheated: The Human Cost of Climate Change by Guzman, Andrew T. [2013]), the overwrought (Storms of My Grandchildren; The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity (Chinese Edition) ), and here a book that insufficiently covers the very topic referenced in the title - "The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History".

Here's what Elizabeth Kolbert does well:
' Defines mass extinctions relative to the background extinction rate.

' Succinctly explains past mass extinction rates to help us better appreciate individual studies that are now being published regarding current findings.

' Provides some good examples of current extinctions that also illustrate why these are harbingers to far worse in the near future.

' Good explanation of the lack of diversity at more northern climes and therefore those regions' disproportionate vulnerability.

' Excellent reporting on migration rates and varying results, including altitude limitations on migration to chase colder climates.

' Kolbert provides a decent explanation on why a warmer world might ultimately result in more biodiversity; but in the short term given current `cold adaptation' of extant life on earth, mass extinction is inevitable in a `business as usual' scenario.

' Kolbert is an excellent writer and good reporter on the events she reports.

Here's where Ms. Kolbert fails:
' Vastly insufficient coverage validating we are currently in a mass extinction event with the exception of her coverage of ocean acidification.

I bookmark ScienceDaily articles that report especially impactful scientific climate change findings. I counted fourteen recent peer-reviewed articles preceding publication of this first edition by a couple of years. Not nearly enough of these findings were covered. That where the very title of the book references our already being in a mass extinction event.

' Failed to more expansively report and illustrate why a small change in climate can have a devastating impact to whole regions [1]. Such illustrations should help people understand that we can't possibly predict all the catastrophic changes that will comes from a fast changing climate; i.e., the "law" of unintended consequences. Such reports would help better align the public's urgency on climate change to the urgency expressed by scientists and scientific organizations.

' Failed to adequately footnote and refer to scientists and studies that she references. For example, on page 166 of the paperback version, Ms. Kolbert refers to a 2004 study on a "species-area" experiment. Both extreme scenarios, the `best case' and `worst case', predict catastrophic extinctions by 2050. Not only is this study not end-noted, the author only refers to the year of the experiments; failing to report the authors' names, the articles they published, and where these articles were published [2]. Inadequately providing citations is always a loss of one star with me.

I learned a lot reading this book. I enjoyed Ms. Kolbert's writing. I wouldn't remove any material from the book. But ultimately, the mostly anecdotal reports of current extinctions are insufficient for a book that promises to report on the current mass extinction event.

1] For example, mountain pine beetles in the Rocky Mountains are killing off millions of acres of lodgepole and ponderosa pines. This is the result of a "minor change" of a 2.7 F warmer region over the past couple of decades. A change that has resulted in an enormous increase in pine beetle procreation rates due to much higher winter survival rates and two reproductive cycles per Spring/Summer/Fall rather than the historical one cycle per year given the shorter winters. The net effect is pine trees dying from up to 60 times higher beetle infestation rates. Mitton and Ferrenberg, "Mountain Pine Beetle Develops an Unprecedented Summer Generation in Response to Climate Warming", The American Naturalist Vol. 179, No. 5, May 2012. doi: 10.1086/665007.

2] I think Elizabeth Kolbert was referencing Thomas, Chris D. & et al., "Extinction risk from climate change", Nature 427, 145-148 (8 January 2004) doi:10.1038/nature02121.
