Outstanding Resource

Everyone needs education, a good amount of it, today for survival and success. Yet most people do not know that studying a subject, understanding it, and scoring grades are all different things. Just because one studies a subject does not mean that he/she will understand it, and just because he/she understands the subject does not mean that he will score well in exams.

I have been a teacher all my life and have been seeing this difference in the lives of the thousands of students that I taught. I often take time to explain these differences, and I instantly notice a change in their perception as well as in their performance. Thus I had always been looking for a good book or two on this subject that I might recommend to my students. Finally I found my book.

There is a market for these books to get reprinted. I understand that paper and distribution costs money. I understand the process to put the books into a Kindle version is not free either.

But it would be wonderful if Amazon could get these long out of print books for sale today. How hard would it be for a deal to be cut for Elsevier (current copyright holder after they acquired Pergamon Press)?

This set is an incredible find for anyone looking for information on Tigran Petrosian. I snapped up a set here on amazon and the money was well spent. It's too bad that Pergamon Chess doesn't reprint this series, because anybody studying chess needs to study Petrosian's games, sooner or later. Both volumes combined have over 2100 games.

A birth mom's perspective.

A wonderful book!! Very insightful. As a birth mom, my son found me last year when he was 33 years old, as I too didn't feel it was my place to look for him, I had to wait for him to find me. We both ordered the book and read it together, he was highlighting something on almost every page and said yes, a book that validates his feelings that he has had his entire life. As for me, I will say while reading the birth mom part, I was nodding my head as well and agreeing with 99% of it. Any person who loves an adopted person should read this book, and a must read for any one person in the adoption triad. Great read!!

This was the first book in her two-book approach. This one was very heart-rending for me to read, as the mother of an adopted son. I did not realize there was so much heartache & pain inside some adopted (or foster) children! It gave me a greater understanding of the root of so much of his self-image, relationship responses and holiday pain. We bought it for him (he was a teen & old enough to understand) and it did help him to place the cause onto a real reason for some of his grief & confusion, which helped him know there were real people with this real heartache. This was recommended to me by a friend who was an adopted child herself & found help and understanding in this book. Ms Verrier's book 'Coming Home to Self: The Adopted Child Grows Up" offers further help & practical ways to begin new understandings, behavior & thinking changes and relationship changes.

This book is my bible. I am an adoptee and I now have a better idea of what's been going on with me for over four decades. While it can be debated whether or not this book presents a valid examination of just how damaged many, if not all, adoptees are, it definitely will open up some new paths to explore. For me personally, the paths that opened for me have been enlightening and also painful. To my fellow adoptees: If you feel like you're not living a "genuine life", check this book out. It may shed some light for you.

For THOUSANDS OF YEARS Man has cultured fish. The species of fish raised have varied from climate to climate and geographic area to geographic area, but the final result has been the same in each instance, an endeavor that has brought food and aesthetic pleasure to mankind. The publication of this book brings to mind the responsibilities of various professions for the health of fish associated with such culture.

Contemporary fish culture has reached new heights of productivity. More and more in the modern world, fish are commercially produced for human consumption and placed in aquaria for their aesthetic beauty. In both instances the animals are raised in confined areas with high population densities. Husbandry of this type may lead to severe disease problems and costly epizootics.

Disease has always been a problem, and the literature surrounding the area is plentiful. The foundation of our knowledge concerning these diseases was laid by investigators from many different scientific fields: fishery biology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and idithyology. The foundation is a firm one, and much is owed to the early and contemporary work of these scientists.

One notes, however, a startling absence of medically trained individuals among the ranks of those concerned with fish health. In fact, the contribution from members of the medical field has been minimal. The major responsibility for the health and welfare of all animals, both companion and food producing, should lie with the veterinary profession. There seems to be little question that medically trained individuals could make a major contribution towards the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fish diseases. The veterinarian, with his knowledge of anatomical pathology, clinical pathology, and medical techniques, is in a unique position to assist the culturist. He has been trained to appreciate epizootiological problems and the relationships of large numbers of animals to their environment. The responsibility to make a contribution, however, lies with the veterinary profession. Members of the veterinary profession must recognize this responsibility and join hands with those!
of other professions who have and will continue to address themselves to fish health problems.

A major problem to culturists and other scientists concerned with fish diseases is access to the literature. Much has been written, but it is literally scattered far and wide and is often out of date or inaccessible. In addition, one of the least carefully investigated areas of fish health is therapeutics. Handbook of Drugs and Chemicals Used in the Treatment of Fish Diseases addresses itself to both problems. It brings under one cover much of the knowledge concerning drugs used to treat diseases of fish, and it does so in a logical and easily accessible manner. It is a careful work, encompassing years of painstaking research and attention to detail. Now culturists, hobbyists, and scientists alike can come to one source to gather information on piscine therapeutics. The work will serve as a reference for years to come and is in this respect a contribution of some consequence to the field of fish health.

THE ART AND SCIENCE of fish medicine is in the dark ages, but it does exist. From the rank amateur hobbyist who comes into the pet store and exclaims, "My fish have all died, how come?," or says, "I think my fish are sick, I need some fish medicine," to the academic expert who is the accepted authority and whose best answer is, "Try it, who knows, it might work," or "Authority No. 256 recommends it in his paper," very few really know how, why, or even if most drugs and medications work on fish. Confusing opinions are rampant. It is into this seething cauldron of confusion that I pour this effort. I know not whether it will fan the flames of controversy or quench the fires of ignorance. But I do know this: I am no authority. I have not written this book because I knew the answers, but because I didn't, and in all too many instances still do not. When I found an answer to my questions or even the remote likelihood of an answer, I wrote it down. Soon, people began coming to me for answers to their fish problems. My "answers" are the product of other authorities' answers with a smattering of my own practical experience of the past twenty-two years of fish keeping thrown in for good measure.

It must be noted that there may be some drugs that the reader feels should have been included. Their absence here does not infer their ineffectiveness, nor does the inclusion of a drug signify its endorsement. Being a compilation of my own and others' research, the reader may find discrepancies with his own evidence. If so, I welcome any comments and criticisms which will enlighten both our boundaries of knowledge.

This book belongs in the library of every fish farmer, aquatic veterinarian, tropical fish wholesaler or retailer, and serious aquarium hobbyist. It is not a book about diagnosing fish diseases, nor is it a picture book. Rather, it is a book about the drugs used in the treatment of fish disease. The first 40% of the book describes where drugs come from, how they are classified, how they work, how to calculate their dosage, and how to administer them. The remaining 60% of the book is a detailed alphabetical listing of perahaps hundreds of active ingredients-- including their composition, synonyms, dosages, and uses. You will see that Tetracycline, Terramcyin, and Oxytetracycline are different names for the same active ingredient and see the senselessness of trying to combine them or of replacing a failed treatment by one with a treatment by another. The appendix gives a listing of alternate choices in bactericides, fungicides, protozoacides, anthelminthics, etc., to help you choose an appropriate alternative. If you are in position to medicate fishes on a regular basis, this book will be a smart addition to your library.

About the Author
Dr. Douglas Goodin, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at UCSF Medical Center, is a neurologist and an internationally renowned expert in the treatment and research of multiple sclerosis.. He earned a bachelor of sciences degree in genetics and biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle; a master of sciences degree in molecular biology at Purdue University in Indiana; and a medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. He completed a residency in neurology at UCSF where he joined the medical center staff in 1982. In addition to multiple sclerosis, Goodin's research interests include various forms of dementia. Goodin also is a professor of neurology at UCSF.
