e. e. cummings: Complete Poems, 1904-1962, by E. E. Cummings

This centennial edition of E. E. Cumming's Complete Poems, published in celebration of his birth on October 14, 1894, contains all of the poems published or designated for publication by the poet in his lifetime.

At the time of his death in 1962, E. E. Cummings was, next to Robert Frost, the most widely read poet in America. Combining Thoreau's controlled belligerence with the brash abandon of an uninhibited bohemian, Cummings, together with Pound, Eliot, and William Carlos Williams, helped bring about the twentieth-century revolution in literary expression. He is recognized on the one hand as the author of some of the most beautiful lyric poems written in the English language, and on the other as one of the most inventive American poets of his time―in the worlds of Richard Kostelanetz, "the major American poet of the middle-twentieth-century."

Review
“One of the greatest lyric poets in our language.” (John Logan - Modern American Poetry)

“To return to…his poems is to return to a buoyancy and boisterousness, of course, but also to an odd bountifulness…[encapsulating] a profound sense of wonder and wistfulness.” (Paul Muldoon - The New Yorker)

“Cummings was one of the most spirited and original American writers of the 20th century.” (Wall Street Journal)

About the Author
E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) was among the most influential, widely read, and revered modernist poets. He was also a playwright, a painter, and a writer of prose. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and, during World War I, served with an ambulance corps in France. He spent three months in a French detention camp and subsequently wrote The Enormous Room, a highly acclaimed criticism of World War I. After the war, Cummings returned to the States and published his first collection of poetry, Tulips & Chimneys, which was characterized by his innovative style: pushing the boundaries of language and form while discussing love, nature, and war with sensuousness and glee. He spent the rest of his life painting, writing poetry, and enjoying widespread popularity and success.

It is a good book just to sit down and read occasionally
By S. L. Montag
This book is complete and is a wonder, since it includes the poems most people are familiar with and some not so commonly known. EE Cummings was a poet who used to be studied in high school and who is, I guess, not well known today. That's a shame because his works are full of humor and insight. It also includes a biography which is helpful in knowing the man and connecting him to the poems. It is a good book just to sit down and read occasionally. I wouldn't suggest the whole book at one time, unless you really like poetry since it is a substantial volume.

Something about his poetry draws me in and captivates me
By Jessica L Sankiewicz
My Thoughts:

This is kind of a book review, but not completely a book review. This is more along the lines of a couple paragraphs of me going off on the experience of reading every poem by the wonderful E.E. Cummings over all of 2012. That’s right. I read every E.E. Cummings poem in a year. I am quite proud of this.

I had read a few handfuls of E.E. Cummings poems before buying this book but I knew I was going to love it. And I wasn’t wrong. I was completely right. I LOVED THESE POEMS. I started marking the page every time I found a poem I wanted to reread again and again. I ended up marking 52 altogether. There’s just something about his poetry that draws me in and captivates me.

It’s hard to explain completely how much you can take away from poetry when you read it. I can see how certain poems or poets can be hard to read, but when you find one that is enjoyable it is truly a great experience. E.E. Cummings is that poet to me.

My Rating: Exceptional

Language, Ideology and Education: The politics of textbooks in language education (Routledge Research in Language Education)From Routled

This book examines the role textbooks play in the teaching of dominant and non-dominant (first and foreign) languages in a range of cultural contexts worldwide. Each chapter addresses important issues related to what constitutes "legitimate knowledge", the politics of learning materials, global cultural awareness, competing ideologies, and the development of multilingual literacies.

Language, Ideology and Education: The Politics of Textbooks in Language Education comprehensively surveys theoretical perspectives and methodological issues in the critical examination of language textbooks. In particular, it looks at:

  • The Cultural Politics of Language Textbooks in the Era of Globalization
  • The Politics of Instructional Materials for English for Young Learners
  • Ideological Tensions and Contradictions in Lower Primary English Teaching Materials in Singapore
  • Creating a Multilingual/multicultural Space in Japanese EFL: A Critical Analysis of Discursive Practices within a New Language Education Policy

The book is primarily addressed to those who teach and research in the areas of Foreign Language Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Language Policy, Critical Pedagogy, and Textual Cultures. Although the book is focused on textbook and materials analysis, rather than evaluation, most chapters discuss implications for curriculum design and materials development and therefore will be relevant to scholars working in those fields.

By the wizard of uz
Because his folowers have granted him godlike status while his critics have dismissed him as a crackpot, it's a bit difficult to explain to those who have not heard of A.C. why this book is such a great read.

Aleister Crowley(1875-1947) recounts his life and the pride he took in being a genius (he had memorized The Bible before he was seven), a poet, an adventurer, a world renowned mountain climber, a blindfold chess master, a lover, a sorcerer, and The Chosen Prophet of the Ancient Gods of Egypt!

But, above all: an English Gentleman.

Unfortunately his compatriots, like queen Victoria on a celebrated occasion, were not amused. The newspapers depicted him as a satanic, devil worshipping maniac. A charge which was somewhat unfounded and rather ironic since this was the man that satanic devil worshipping maniacs were too scared to mess with.

He was a passionate artist with a flair for danger, an extreme of the spiritual and the sensual, a cross between between St. John of the Cross and the Marquis de Sade.
Only Rasputin could match him as a true historical figure that seems too improbable to have existed.
Neither man would be 'believable', even in lurid work of fictional melodrama. Yet they lived.

And A.C. topped Rasputin in possesing (or being possed by) a savagely sarcastic sense of humor which took no prisoners. Say what you will of him but one must grant him a remarkable talent for making enemies everywhere.

W.B. Yeats wanted him expelled from The Golden Dawn (The most influential Rosicrucian/Freemasonic lodge of the 19th century) on the grounds that 'a mystical society should not have to serve as a reform school for juvenile delinquents.' For his part, The Magus informs us that Yeats was full of black, bilious rage, because he, Crowley was by far the greater poet.

He once remarked that it was interesting that such a small county as Stratford had given England her two greatest poets, for one must not forget Shakespeare . . .

A.C. founded his own temple of 'life, love, and liberty' after his wife had a vision while visiting a museum in Cairo. The year was 1904 and the gods were ready to annoint an English Gentleman to bear forth their message to humanity and usher in a new era which would replace Christianity, as Christianity had replaced the crumbling faiths of the Roman Empire.
Thus 'The Book of the Law' came to be written (or dictated?) Its main tenet was "Do What Thou Wilt.'
Apparently Isis or Horus were fans of the novels of Rabelais, since that was the motto inscribed in his fictional abbey.
And, in all likelihood Rabelais probably got it from St. Augustine's maxim: "Love, and do what you will".
And if you can name which Greek philosopher thought it up first, treat yourself a trip to Cairo and listen closely to your inner voice. . .

It would hardly be surprising to be told that AC was reared in an ultra-fundamentalist Christian sect and thus, he rebelled with vengeance.

What is surprising is that the quest for 'The Holy Grail' never left him, even as he climbed the Himalayas, seduced countesses, hobnobbed with Rodin, and made life quite interesting for anyone around him.
A fascinating look at a strange man and his times recounted with humor, sorrow and faith.

Life Story of Mr. Crowley--Straight from the Horus' Mouth...
By Graham D. Lincoln
Regardless of other reviewers comments about Crowley's mountain-climbing adventures, and other travels, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute detail ! Obviously, his mountain climbing experiences and world travel helped him to develop his "Will," which enabled him to become the most famous Occultist in history. Every time I had a spare moment, I sat down with this "Autohagiography" and poured over the pages until I found myself in a delimma.....only 6 pages until it is finished. More ! More !
Two years ago, I would not have imagined I would be reviewing Crowley books. Most of the information about this man seems to have been written by people who took all the myths surrounding Crowley seriously, or preferred to inform the reading public of the Controversial / Tabloid exploits Crowley was *supposedly* involved with. However, despite various Occult Researchers' whimsical attitude toward truth vs. tabloid money-making rumors, this book reveals Crowley as a MAN, not a "Beast."
To read the Confessions is to read of a Poetic Young man, who happened to be born into a society Indoctrinated with ridiculous concepts that his level of Intelligence simply could not submit to. The Subversive, Slave-like religion of his birth pushed him to explore other fields of interest and to study Comparative Religion. Reading his autobiography, it is obvious that he was simply too intelligent to be kept down in the mire of "Because."
This man thought for himself and lived for himself--despite society's ridiculous posturing and false "morality."
Basically, Crowley "tells it like it is," instead of adopting the complacent, indoctrinated attitude of his era and contrymen.
There is very little "Occult" information in this book--in fact, he mostly writes about his Mountaineering, Poetry and World Travel throughout most of these "Confessions." The occult-related incidents often seem to be thrown-in as an after-thought, as-if he would much-rather be remembered as a Poet.
Personally, I learned quite a lot about Anthropology from this collection of Travels in India, China, South America, etc. It is such a shame that the intellectual level of society (or lack thereof) cannot comprehend Great Men. Crowley was extremely well-educated--therefore, it is unlikely that younger generations will comprehend even a fourth of the material in this autobiography. Well-read individuals will be thrilled to add the Confessions to their library !
Don't be frightened by propagandists and money-mongers--this book was written straight from the Horus' mouth and sets the record straight.

Brilliant insight into a brilliant man!
By A Customer
The notorious Aleister Crowley: The Beast 666. Magician, Mountaineer, Poet, Author, Gentleman, Entrepreneur, etc. etc. This book, written by the Beast himself, will unmask this Sphinx of a man. He will take you along on the ride of his life, from the boy growing up under religious lunacy to the man proclaiming the Word of his Aeon. I shall let Crowley himself be the guide to his story, urging you thereby to buy this book. Everybody should read this book, whether aspiring to the man or not. Between the lines of his life-story he covers his view on just about every subject, giving his candid, arrogant, yet astutely accurate foliage of human behavior. Only one person that I know of has ever dared to step so completely outside the collective consciousness (and folly) of the human race and observe it like his own little science-project, and that is the author of this book. And he will share it all with you, while joyfully always being the first to remind you that he is no less of a fool. All throughout, he invites you to relive his adventures of mountaineering, wordly travels, and Magick experimentation using the most exquisite use of language I have ever witnessed. This work is in no way the ramblings of a man hopelessly lost to drugs. If he truly was the Beast 666, then let me bow and give my sympathies unto Him, for the man who wrote this book was as true to himself and others as they come. If being this sincere and unfettered by hypocrisy is diabolic, then I am first in line to join that family! Sure, Crowley had his fix ideas, not all of them uncontroversial, but he always either admitted his prejustice or backed them up with lucid reasoning. Buy this book, read it once -or better, twice- and judge for yourself. For Do what Thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law!

Genius in the Shadows: A Biography of Leo Szilard, the Man Behind the Bomb, by William Lanouette

(A 1993 New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year) Virtually forgotten outside of the world of atomic physics, Leo Szilrd has long been overshadowed by figures like Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, and Robert Oppenheimer, yet he is perhaps more truly, if reluctantly, the "father of the atom bomb." It was Szilrd who first theorized the energy from nuclear chain reactions; he co-designed, with Fermi, the first nuclear reactor, and with Einstein drafted a warning to the U.S. government about the potential for Nazi Germany to develop an atom bomb. Yet the eccentric Szilrd often confounded his most supportive colleagues, and in 1962 he founded the first political action committee for arms control, the Council for a Livable World. With a new introduction by the author, an expert in atomic energy and arms control, this revised and updated edition is a captivating portrait of a singular scientific prophet. "In this comprehensive study, science writer [William] Lanouette and [Bela] Silrd, the subject's brother, cast welcome light on the physicist's career and character. The Hungarian-born Szilrd was at the epicenter of the Manhattan Project-indeed, he patented the first reactor design with Enrico Fermi-but his concern over the destructive uses of atomic power (and a degree of personal eccentricity) isolated him from the celebrity (and Nobel Prizes) that came to other founding fathers of quantum physics.... Readers will find Szilrd to be a 'curious and human character' whose engagement with his work and its consequences was so profound that it can make other figures of the era seem hollow."-Publishers Weekly

Life and loves of the man who patented atomic energy
By A Customer
Leo Szilard's life is traced from his early childhood in Budapest, Hungary through his student days in Berlin; and the development of the first atomic reactor and bomb. Dealing openly with Szilard's ambitions, obsessions, and fears the book delves into the intriguing details of his intensely adventurous life. For example, the very day in 1933 Adolf Hitler became Chancellor, Szilard caught the last train out of Germany; saving his worldly possessions and himself from the hands of the Nazis. Szilard's pluck is revealed when in England, not having access to a laboratory, he borrows equipment and performs perhaps the first nuclear physics chain reaction experiments in his hotel room! Throughout the details of his evolving atomic theories and practical inventions is woven his love life. Because of his genius, vision, and high human values, Szilard is always regarded with suspicion; especially by the American military bureaucracy. Indeed, General Grove who oversees the United States atomic bomb project has it in for Szilard; and even tries to get him deported as an undesireable alien. This is the story of the man who not only ushered in atomic power into the 20th Century but maintained his individuality while doing so. A somewhat sad love story is woven through the fascinating history of Szilard's atomic power. Many classic photographs of Szilard at important and personal events accompany the very well organized text. Although not a literary masterpiece, this book is a biographical masterpiece and should be read by scholars and romantics alike

Outstanding Portrait of a Catalytic Genius
By A Customer
Anyone interested in Szilard, early 20th Century World History, the A-Bomb, or all of the above will find this book hard to put down. This biography is comprehensive, well-researched and properly kind to its subject. Dr. Szilard probably will never get enough credit for his genius and all his great ideas and achievements, but this book does him justice. He seems to come alive in this book, always several steps ahead of everyone else.
American culture's emphasis on individualism often ignores the more collaborative contributions such as Dr. Szilard's. An original, he both created and collaborated, and this book tells his story.
At times, I thought the author might have been over-stating some of Dr. Szilard's accompishments, but the story is otherwise well-done, and frankly, Dr. Szilard deserves a little promotion, so I didn't mind.

Great Title, he really was a genius in the shadows, a lot like Nikola Tesla.
By Carol Thomas
Szilard was an interesting character, and had a brilliant mind. He isn't well known and doesn't get a lot of credit in the history books. Sort of like Nikola Tesla, great ideas, but someone else ran with them and got the credit. Marconi in Tesla's case, for the wireless, Fermi, Groves, and Oppenheimer in Szilard's, for the chain reaction, nuclear reactors, and the bomb. Truth is, the person who is interested in the science, for science's sake, seldom gets credit for his discovery, the people who commercialize it do. It's good that this book was written about him, and it's a very well written book too.

Lords of Finance: 1929, The Great Depression, and the Bankers who Broke the World, by Liaquat Ahamed

With a keen sense of history and compelling narrative skills, Liaquat Ahamed gives us a vivid and dramatic account of four men whose actions led to the world economic collapse of the late 1920s.

Many of us presume that the Great Depression resulted from a confluence of inexorable forces beyond any one person's or government's control. In fact, as economist Liaquat Ahamed explains, it was decisions taken by a small number of central bankers that were the primary cause of the economic meltdown.

Meet the neurotic and enigmatic Montagu Norman of the Bank of England; the xenophobic and suspicious Emile Moreau of the Banque de France; the arrogant yet brilliant Hjalmar Schacht of the Reichsbank; and the dynamic Benjamin Strong of the New York Federal Reserve Bank. These men were as prominent then as Alan Greenspan and Hank Paulson are in our time.

Lords of Finance brings a fresh perspective on the origins of financial crises and an arresting reminder that its individuals who lie at the heart of global catastrophe.

Amazon Exclusive: Liaquat Ahamed on the Economic Climate

In December 1930, the great economist Maynard Keynes published an article in which he described the world as living in “the shadows of one of the greatest economic catastrophes in modern history.” The world was then 18 months into what would become the Great Depression. The stock market was down about 60%, profits had fallen in half and unemployed had climbed from 4% to about 10%.

If you take our present situation, 16 months into the current recession, we're about at the same place. The stock market is down 50 to 60 percent, profits are down 50 percent, unemployment is up from 4.5% to over 8%.

Over the next 18 months between January 1930 and July 1932 the bottom fell out of the world economy. It did so because the authorities applied the wrong medicine to what was a very sick economy. They let the banking system go under, they tried to cut the budget deficit by curbing government expenditure and raising taxes, they refused to assist the European banking system, and they even raised interest rates. It was no wonder the global economy crumbled.

Luckily with the benefit of those lessons, we now know what not to do. This time the authorities are applying the right medicine: they have cut interest rates to zero and are keeping them there, they have saved the banking system from collapse and they have introduced the largest stimulus package in history.

And yet I cannot help worrying that the world economy may yet spiral downwards. There are two areas in particular that keep me up at night.

The first is the U.S. banking system. Back in the fall, the authorities managed to prevent a financial meltdown. People are not pulling money out of banks anymore—in fact, they are putting money in. The problem is that as a consequence of past bad loans, the banking system has lost a good part of its capital. There is no way that the economy can recover unless the banking system is recapitalized. While there are many technical issues about the best way to do this, most experts agree that it will not be done without a massive injection of public money, possibly as much as $1 trillion from you and me, the taxpayer.

At the moment tax payers are so furious at the irresponsibility of the bankers who got us into this mess that they are in no mood to support yet more money to bail out banks. It is going to take an extraordinary act of political leadership to persuade the American public that unfortunately more money is necessary to solve this crisis.

The second area that keeps me up at night is Europe. During the real estate bubble years, the 13 countries of Eastern Europe that were once part of the Soviet empire had their own bubble. They now owe a gigantic $1.3 trillion dollars, much of which they won’t be able to pay. The burden will have to fall on the tax payers of Western Europe, especially Germany and France.

In the U.S. we at least have the national cohesion and the political machinery to get New Yorkers and Midwesterners to pay for the mistakes of Californian and Floridian homeowners or to bail out a bank based in North Carolina. There is no such mechanism in Europe. It is going to require political leadership of the highest order from the leaders of Germany and France to persuade their thrifty and prudent taxpayers to bail out foolhardy Austrian banks or Hungarian homeowners.

The Great Depression was largely caused by a failure of intellectual will—the men in charge simply did not understand how the economy worked. The risk this time round is that a failure of political will leads us into an economic cataclysm.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Almost all critics praised Lords of Finance for its command of economic history and engaging, lucid prose. Ahamed, noted the New York Times, illuminates wise parallels between the misplaced confidence that spawned the global depression in the 1930s and the illusory calculations of risk that led to the current financial crisis. His compelling biographies also personalize economic history. While critics disagreed about whether lay readers will, in a century's time, care about Norman, Moreau, and Schact, the only negative words came from the Wall Street Journal, which criticized Lords of Finance for an imprecise understanding of the gold standard: "Harrumphing about the ‚gold standard,' Mr. Ahamed reminds me of the fellow who condemned ‚painting' because he had no use for Andy Warhol."

A Masterpiece
By Crosslands
Mr. Ahamed has written a wonderful book on both the financiers who dominated money policy in the period between the two world wars and the economic history of that period. Mr. Ahamed writes very clearly and well about both the bankers and the period. His writing is also as vivid and interesting as it is clear. And Mr. Ahamed's writing imparts a extremely vast amount of detail and information on the economics of the 1920s and the Great Depression. He has provided an extensive list of references along with a vast amount of footnotes. Mr. Ahamed's work is history and economic history at its best.

Among the major gems of information provided by Mr. Ahamed is the baneful effect of the gold standard between the world wars. As other economists such as Peter Temin have indicated, each economy began to recover from the Great Depression when the economy left the gold standard almost invariably. Mr. Ahamed demonstrates the absurdity of Montagu Norman's policy of restoring the British pound to its pre World War I value in gold.

Mr. Ahamed also demonstrates how World War I drastically changed economic conditions so that the British led prewar gold standard was an impossibility. He also demonstrates the pernicious and poisonous effect of the reparations imposed on the former Central Powers by the Treaty of Versailles. These reparations gravely hindered international cooperation. And Mr. Ahamed makes evident that the central bankers have a colossal impact on the economy and the lives of individuals all over the world.

This book is a must read for all Americans, particularly those who have studied economics.

Yes it's about the gold standard, but there's much more ...
By Larry R Frank Sr, MBA, CFP
I've read through the other reviews and, for the most part, agree with those who rate this book highly. I won't reiterate those good comments.

I would like to bring the book, yes primarily about the period 1914 to 1944, into relevance today. First, it is a great historical read essential to consider and understand today for those clamoring to go back to some currency standard pegged to a natural resource, i.e., gold or silver. What is instructive is that nobody could agree on what the rules of that standard were, primarily because each country had its own set of issues to deal with. Solutions to a problem in one country often lead to another problem somewhere else.

Second, recalling a general recognition of a bubble in modern times through the term irrational exuberance coined by Fed Chairman Greenspan, page 321 sums up 1928, "There was now general agreement that the United States was faced with a stock market bubble. But the system was greatly divided on how to respond." In modern times, the debate also was about prematurely pricking economic growth for the sake of containing market valuations.

Third, pages 323-324 discusses how the control of amount of credit was outside of the banking system. Interesting to read that back before 1929, much like the 1990's and 2000's, "It was these players {US Corporations, British stockholders, European bankers flush with liquidity, even some Oriental potentates}, all of them outside the Fed's control, who were by far the most important factor supporting leveraged positions in the stock market." Today, think Credit Default Swaps and Mortgage Backed Securities instead of brokers loans back then. Indeed history seems to teach us that most bubbles are financed by some sort of excessive credit.

Finally, Ahamed's epilogue also brings yester year to the fore. 1929 - 1933 was not just one crisis, but a series of four sequential crisis's that rolled across the world each feeding off the previous crisis. He then shows how similar crisis's occurred starting with Mexico borrowing too heavily in 1994 (Germany 1920's), the emerging markets crisis 1997-98 (European financial crisis 1931), the bubble leading to the tech crash in 2000 (US 1929), and the global financial crisis in 2007 (bank panics 1931 - 1933). He admits the analogy may not be exact, however this time around there was a decent interval between crisis that did not exist back then as well as a series of misjudgments back then that seemed to not exist more recently.

Overall, an informative read. Two other related works that provide a broader background for a deeper understanding of the era, so one may learn more about today and more importantly how we got here, include:
The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression by Amity Shlaes
The Great Inflation and Its Aftermath: The Past and Future of American Affluence by Robert J. Samuelson

A very good work for a deeper appreciation of the development of money:
The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World by Niall Ferguson

For a read about perhaps why crisis may be okay after all ...
Pop! Why Bubbles Are Great For The Economy by Daniel Gross

Wealth Odyssey: The Essential Road Map For Your Financial Journey Where Is It You Are Really Trying To Go With Money?

Not the easiest read, but worth it
By M. Levine
I saw the author on a Sunday news show, and was intrigued about this book. I thought that reading about the years leading up to the Great Depression would be very interesting given today's economic environment. This book exceeded my expectations in that regard, but it gets very slow at times. However, the juicy parts are very juicy indeed.

As we get further and further removed from the early 20th century, what took place during WWI and the years after become less and less common knowledge. Unlike WWII, which has many movies and documentaries still shown and on cable TV, this period is still a mystery to most people, myself included. I learned a lot from this book in that regard.

There were two things that really stood out. First, the book is completely non-partisan. I find most books dealing with the current state of the economy or the country in general are nothing more than advertisements for a certain political agenda. This was nothing of the sort, and lays blame with individual decisions, not individuals or political parties. Second, I saw so many parallels to what is happening today, it was uncanny.

Read this book, then come to your own conclusions about where we go from here.
