Differential Geometry: Curves -- Surfaces -- Manifolds (Student Mathematical Library), by Wolfgang Kuhnel

This carefully written book is an introduction to the beautiful ideas and results of differential geometry. The first half covers the geometry of curves and surfaces, which provide much of the motivation and intuition for the general theory. The second part studies the geometry of general manifolds, with particular emphasis on connections and curvature. The text is illustrated with many figures and examples. The prerequisites are undergraduate analysis and linear algebra. This new edition provides many advancements, including more figures and exercises, and--as a new feature--a good number of solutions to selected exercises.

Amazon.com Review

This Is Gonna Hurt: Music, Photography And Life Through The Distorted Lens Of Nikki Sixx is part photo, part journal—but all Nikki Sixx. It is a collection of compelling photography and stories that capture the rage, love, optimism, darkness, and determination that shape his work. Combining the raw authenticity that defined his New York Times bestseller The Heroin Diaries with a photographic journey, This Is Gonna Hurt chronicles Sixx's experiences—from his early years filled with toxic waste, to his success with Motley Crue, to his death from an OD and his eventual rebirth through music, photography, and love.

Love story, bad-ass rock tell-all, social commentary, family memoir, This Is Gonna Hurt offers the compelling insights of an artist and a man struggling to survive, connect, and find a happy ending—a search that fuels Sixx's being.

A bit hypocritical, no?
By Sheri
I did enjoy the inspiring message of the book. The photographs...... not as much.

Nikki Sixx definitely has a fascination with the macabre and the bizarre. He says his subjects are the true definition of beauty, at least in his opinion. I'm not so sure. He photographs homeless people, prostitutes, the elderly and overweight people.... claiming that they are the true beauties. He says what society considers beautiful is actually ugly. Ok..... If he really felt that way, one would think for his third wife he would choose a plump amputee who was close to his age. But no. The third Mrs. Sixx is a rail thin former Wilhemina model, born in 1985 while Motley Crue was touring their third album. His first two wives were Playboy Playmates.

Hey, rock stars and models go together like peanut butter and jelly. Nothing wrong with that. But it's a bit disingenuous for Nikki to try to sell his hobby of photographing the disfigured and downtrodden by saying it's all good because I think they're beautiful. Then marrying the exact societal definition of a decades younger rock star wife, who is appropriately nipped, tucked and enhanced, to boot. To quote Judge Judy, I do believe he's trying to pee on our legs and tell us it's raining. It is like he knew the question of exploitation would come up, so he needed some good lines to swiffer those questions away. This hypocrisy stood out to me and l felt it should be noted.

An amalgam of disparate thoughts and musings from one of rocks greatest creators...
By Thomas Moody
Seemingly seeking to continue the majesty of his sublime and profound "Heroin Diaries," Motley Crue founder and bassist Nikki Sixx pens this rather oblique narrative, with very dark and oftentimes disturbing photographs, to accompany his bands (Sixx AM) similarly named soundtrack.

My belief though after reading this is that for an overall appreciation of this work, the prospective reader simply MUST be a fan of Motley Crue, Sixx AM or of Nikki himself. There is no way, in my opinion, in which this book appeals to a wider, more diverse readership. It is so centralized on his post sobriety that anyone not familiar with the entire story gleans very little other than a really bizarre visceral experience.

Nikki starts the narrative with a bridge from The Heroin Diaries into his post-sober realization of photographic passion. But while meandering through these philosophical musings, he manages to present an often surprising life-view that actually transcends the photography, all the while giving us a true insight to his current psyche. To me, any anarchic youth who would deem to read this could get true meaning from these digressions...here is a guy who's actually lived the worst of any rebellious youth existence and survived to describe it. It is these perhaps unanticipated digressions that really make this book work.

Toward the end, and clearly looking for filler material, we get the details of Nikki's rather aesthetic and short-lived romance with LA Ink's Kat Von D. In a breakup almost predictable from the start, Sixx nevertheless delivers eloquent and heartfelt tribulations while attempting to manage a Crue tour. Again, much of this shows a depth of character unseen in Diaries while also being surprisingly moving. He then ends the book with his current projects for fashion, radio and Covenant House, a private agency that assists homeless teenagers.

To me, "This Is Gonna' Hurt" is an almost inadvertent philosophical success. Nikki Sixx, in an attempt to conceptualize his post Heroin Diaries sobriety, has delivered a marvelous treatise on maturation and personal enlargement. There is much to take away from these renderings of a veteran rock star and I for one found them quite inspiring. Again, not a work for the general reader, but if you have or had any interest in Motley Crue or with the current expansion of its founder, you'll be rewarded with a read of true inspiration and, after a listen to the soundtrack, a mark of how he's progressed. I, as a fan, really enjoyed this.

Yes, yes it is.
By Sabrina Harrington
This book makes you laugh while you're crying, scares and unsettles you while making you feel at peace, it makes you regret being a Sixx fan 30 years ago but so glad that you still are a fan. Some of the images repulse you while, at the same time, mesmerize you with their beauty. Moments of black anger are quickly followed by ethereal happiness. That happiness is soon replaced by a deep sadness. Sympathy for the author is felt in the exact same moment in time that you realize that you are overwhelmingly proud of him.

You will go through the entire menagerie of human emotions in the time it takes you to read this book. And when you finish the book, you will slowly close it, place it on the coffee table, and stare at it for a good half hour before you can muster up the courage or desire to move.

The book, in my opinion, can only be described as a Beautiful Monster.

But one thing is for sure when nothing else is: in the words of the author, This Is Gonna Hurt.

Hit and Run, by Nancy Griffin, Kim Masters

Hit and Run tells the improbable and often hilarious story of how two Hollywood film packagers went on a campaign to reinvent themselves as studio executives -- at Sony's expense. Veteran reporters Nancy Griffin and Kim Masters chronicle the rise of Jon Peters, a former hairdresser, seventh-grade dropout, and juvenile delinquent, and his soulless soul mate, Peter Guber -- and all the sex, drugs, and fistfights along the way. It is the story of the ultimate Hollywood con job and the standard by which every subsequent business blunder has been measured. Hit and Run delivers rock-solid business reporting liberally laced with inside gossip and outrageous scandal -- plus a new afterword bringing us up to date on the latest fallout from the Guber-Peters legacy.

Amazon.com Review
If there is a more archetypical tale of Hollywood in the '80s than the buccaneers' adventures of Jon Peters, Barbra Streisand's former hairdresser, and his business partner Peter Guber, it hasn't been written yet. This thorough, stylish book recounts the rise of Peters and Guber, who together earned fortunes by schmoozing their way to the top, seducing gullible investors, and shoving aside the filmmakers who actually turned out successful films like "Rain Man" and "Batman." The Japanese executives at Sony, in this delightful insider account, were just the most recent and most hoodwinked in a long line of Peters' and Gubers' dupes.

From Publishers Weekly
This is basically the story of two boys who never grew up, but ended up running Sony-owned Columbia Pictures into the ground. Peters, whom the Los Angeles Times described as a "seventh-grade dropout and reform school graduate who began his show-business career as Barbra Steisand's hairdresser-boyfriend-manager," was a master at self-promotion; only semi-literate but able to count well enough to make it big in Hollywood. Bostonian Guber earned several academic degrees before "going Hollywood," somehow managing to indifferently run several studios and make high profits and only a few good films. This book will leave film fans drooling at charges that Peters hired Heidi Fleiss's prostitutes as gifts and that he either bedded or assaulted his numerous conquests (Jacqueline Bisset and Lesley Ann Warren, among others). Guber, the quintessential New Age yuppie, is seen heading off his divorce because it would cost him too much, and participating in hand-holding group-therapy sessions with business-partner Peters. The business side of this book is also intriguing, recounting internecine financial twists and turns that finally have a top Sony executive exclaiming: "Huh! You bankrupt Sony!" Griffin, the West Coast editor of Premiere magazine, and Masters, a reporter for the Washington Post, present a shocking read that will have readers gasping at the obscene overindulgence of Hollywood. From Library Journal
This unauthorized account of Tinseltown madness features the disastrous duo of corporate executives from Columbia Pictures and their alleged bilking of Sony. With the skill of a slick salesman, narrator Ron McLarty partially succeeds in palming off the hearsay testimony about Sony's ill-advised Hollywood venture. McLarty's off-the-cuff manner enhances the tantalizing, juicy gossip served up by authors Griffin and Masters. The convincing descriptions of the grotesque displays of wealth by the chairmen pitted against the staggering $3 million loss that Sony swallows will undoubtedly titillate some. However, the shock value this program packs can't make up for the lack of good journalism. Most libraries can pass on this one.?Mark P. Tierney, The World Bank, Washington,

The funniest non-fiction book you will ever read
By 718 Session
I read this book three years ago and I'm still laughing.
Griffin & Masters have created THE required reading book on everything that is wrong with Hollywood. They were able to tell the inside stories of multi-million dollar deals and make them understandable. Jon Peters, a barely literate hairdresser who happened to be friends with Barbara Streisand, and his business partner Peter Guber schmoozed their way through the 80s and were picked by Sony to run their newly acquired Columbia/Tri-Star pictures. Billions of dollars in losses later (Last Action Hero, I'll Do Anything) they got kicked out.
It is really an incredible story. If it was fiction, you'd think it completly impossible to believe, but it is all true.

A compelling tale of a great Hollywood tragedy
By A Customer
The authors have done an amazing job of compiling an incredible amount of information and assimilating it in a well-thought out and informative manner. The story of how Jon Peters and Peter Guber were able to so completely screw Sony is unbelievable. Yet, Kim Masters and Nancy Griffin boil all the subplots down into a manageable and compelling story that is completely accessible. It isn't often that a non-fiction book reads like a novel. An absolute must-read for anyone interested in the film industry.

As frightening as The Exorcist.
By William E. Hunter
This is one of those must-read Hollywood exposes, along the lines of "The Battle for Brazil" and "Indecent Exposure". It recounts the truly amazing story of how two small-timers in the business, Peter Gruber and Jon Peters, somehow rose to the top of the industry and headed Columbia Pictures for Sony...taking them on an incredible ride of excess and mismanagement. The real villan here though is Sony's seemingly endless series of bonehead moves during their purchase of Columbia, overpaying billions and putting their trust in two of the greatest flim-flam artists in Hollywood. Not only do they grossly overpay during the purchase, but they continue to pay and pay and pay...it really does boggle the mind. It's a ringing examination of the dangers of multi-culture dealings, and an entertaining, and truly frightening, trip through the Hollywood movie machine.

Amazon.com Review
An April 2007 Significant 7 Editors' Pick: Funny, engaging, and oh-so-practical, Send is the ultimate etiquette handbook for email, making David Shipley and Will Schwalbe the "Miss Manners" resource for the digital age. Full of practical insights, Send is an invaluable resource for anyone who uses email, and is guaranteed to help you "think before you click." We are not the only fans of this important book. We asked psychologist, science journalist, and bestselling author Daniel Goleman to read Send and give us his take. Check out his exclusive guest review below. --Daphne Durham

Guest Reviewer: Daniel Goleman

Daniel Goleman is an internationally known psychologist who lectures frequently to professional groups, business audiences, and on college campuses, and is the author of many bestselling books, including Emotional Intelligence and most recently, Social Intelligence.

Poor Michael Brown. During the darkest days of the Hurricane Katrina debacle, Brown, then director of FEMA, the agency that so badly bungled the rescue efforts, sent this email: "Are you proud of me? Can I quit now? Can I go home?"

Emails can come back to haunt us--any of us. Few among us have mastered this medium, and only slowly are we realizing its dangers.

From the earliest days of email people "flamed", sending off irritating or otherwise annoying messages. One explanation for the failure to inhibit our more unruly impulses online is a mismatch between the screen we stare at as we email, and the cues the social circuits of the brain use to navigate us through an interaction effectively: on email there is no tone of voice, no facial expression. When we talk to someone on the phone or face-to-face these circuits would ordinarily squelch impulses that will seem "off." Lacking these crucial cues, flaming occurs.

It's not just flaming--I've sent my fair share of emails that were, in retrospect, embarrassing, too familiar or formal, or otherwise wrong in tone. Email invites these lapses in social intelligence in part because the social brain flies blind. In the absence of the other person's real-time emotional signals we need to take a moment to shift from focusing on our own feelings and thoughts, and intentionally focus on the other person, even in absentia, and consider, How might this message come across?

The peril of being off-key is amplified by the temptation to hit SEND prematurely: before we've thought it over and had a chance to ease up on that too-stiff tone, drop that bit of sarcasm, and remember to ask about the kids.

In the old days of letter writing--a dying art--we had plenty of time to rewrite before sealing the envelope, and so flaming letters were far more rare than red-hot emails. And so the brave new world of email could benefit from a civilizing force, a voice that articulates the ground rules online.

Enter Send: The Essential Guide to Email for Office and Home, a new book by David Shipley (an old friend of mine) and Will Schwalbe. Send not only articulates the way to win--or keep--friends online, but offers practical tips on both email etiquette and on the writing style most suitable.

In this witty and wise book Shipley and Schwalbe give essential guidance on vital matters like the politics of using Cc (nobody likes to be left out); when to just reply and when to "Reply All"; the danger of the URGENT subject (too many and you cry wolf); fine-tuning your greetings to fit the relationship (if you use the wrong one, you can lose them at hello); how best to apologize online (put the word 'sorry' in the subject or else the email may never be read).

But Send is far more than Miss Manners for the Web; it's brimming with fascinating insights. For example, now that email has become the way we talk, showing up in person has added impact as the ultimate compliment, signifying that the person, meeting or project has special importance for you.

Years ago a slim volume by Strunk and White, The Elements of Style, laid out the ground rules for good writing; the book became a bible for authors, widely known just as "Strunk and White." Send should make Shipley and Schwalbe the "Strunk and White" for the Web. --Daniel Goleman (www.danielgoleman.info)

From Publishers Weekly
From this essential guidebook's opening sentence—"Bad things can happen on email"—Shipley and Schwalbe make all too clear what can go wrong. E-mail's ubiquity, with casual and formal correspondence jumbled in the same inbox, makes misunderstandings common; e-mail's inexpressive, text-only format doesn't help. Given its brief history, there's no established etiquette for usage, which is why this primer is so valuable. It promises the reader hope of becoming more efficient and less annoying, reducing danger of a career-ending blunder. Brisk, practical and witty, the book aims to improve the reader's skills as sender and recipient: devising effective subject lines and exploring "the politics of the cc"; how to steer clear of legal issues; and how to recognize different types of attachments. Using real-life examples from flame wars and awkward exchanges (including their own), Shipley and Schwalbe (op-ed editor of the New York Times and Hyperion Books' editor-in-chief) explain why people so often say "incredibly stupid things" in their outgoing messages. "Email has a tendency to encourage the lesser angels of our nature," they note. They also offer "seven big reasons to love email," along with quick guides to instant messaging and e-mail technology, all the while urging us to "think before [we] send." (Apr.)

Hillary Clinton wanted this book, I want to know why!
By Patricia Tumlin
Full disclosure, haven't read the first page. I saw this book title & author name as the book Hillary Clinton was asking about getting for her email problems. I wanted to be able to say, that yes, I have THAT (relatively unknown) BOOK that everyone is talking about.

I'll get around to checking out its wisdom, as I know only enough to get by.
Which I'm guessing was HRC's dilemma.

Makes you think twice before writing an email
By A dad
This is a very short book, especially considering font. It packs an important message. This message is extremely difficult to permanently learn. It's this: there's something about email that draws us in and makes us use it when we shouldn't.

Email is so pervasive and powerful that warnings tend not to change behavior for long. It's usually easier to email than call, and sometimes easier than simply not emailing. In this book, authors Shipley and Schwalbe explain in sufficient detail the limitations and perils of email as a communication medium. This is what we should keep in mind while we enjoy the great benefits of email.

If it were easy to control our emailing habits, the media wouldn't be filled with email stories concerning the rich, famous and powerful. Send addresses lessons that aren't easy to learn in a permanent way. While Send is not my book for organizing email, it has the best approach I've seen concerning problems of email as a communication medium.

By Chris E. Thompson
This "IS" likely used as a corporate training guide to email usage. It's also clear why Hillery had a copy of it 'rush' delivered to her after Benghazi and while using her 'private' email server. While not the comprehensive guide one might expect on 'security', it does cover the PC use of email in the professional environment ad nauseam.

Communication Networks: An Optimization, Control, and Stochastic Networks Perspective, by R. Srikant, Lei Ying

Provides a modern mathematical approach to the design of communication networks for graduate students, blending control, optimization, and stochastic network theories. A broad range of performance analysis tools are discussed, including important advanced topics that have been made accessible to students for the first time. Taking a top-down approach to network protocol design, the authors begin with the deterministic model and progress to more sophisticated models. Network algorithms and protocols are tied closely to the theory, illustrating the practical engineering applications of each topic. The background behind the mathematical analyses is given before the formal proofs and is supported by worked examples, enabling students to understand the big picture before going into the detailed theory. End-of-chapter problems cover a range of difficulties, with complex problems broken into several parts, and hints to many problems are provided to guide students. Full solutions are available online for instructors.

Review
"This book by Srikant and Ying fills a major void - an analytical and authoritative study of communication networks that covers many of the major advances made in this area in an easy-to-understand and self-contained manner. It is a must read for any networking student, researcher, or engineer who wishes to have a fundamental understanding of the key operations of communication networks, from network dimensioning and design to congestion control, routing, and scheduling. Throughout the book, the authors have taken pains to explain highly mathematical material in a manner that is accessible to a beginning graduate student. This has often required providing new examples, results, and proofs that are simple and easy to follow, which makes the book attractive to academics and engineers alike. A must have networking book for one's personal library!"
Ness B. Shroff, Ohio State University

"Communication Networks provides a deep, modern and broad yet accessible coverage of the analysis of networks. The authors, who made many original contributions to this field, guide the readers through the intuition behind the analysis and results. The text is ideal for self-study and as a basis for a graduate course on the mathematics of communication networks. Students in networking will benefit greatly from reading this book."
Jean Walrand, University of California, Berkeley

"Communication Networks, by Srikant and Ying, provides a mathematically rigorous treatment of modern communication networks. The book provides the essential mathematical preliminaries in queueing theory, optimization and control, followed by a rigorous treatment of network architectures, protocols and algorithms that are at the heart of modern-day communication networks and the Internet. It is the best textbook on communication networks from a theoretical perspective in over 20 years, filling a much needed void in the field. It can be an excellent textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate classes, and extremely useful to researchers in this rapidly evolving field."
Eytan Modiano, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

"This book presents a view of communication networks, their architecture and protocols, grounded in the theoretical constructs from optimization and queuing theory that underpin the modern approach to the design and analysis of networks. It is a superb introduction to this approach."
Frank Kelly, University of Cambridge

"This textbook provides a thoughtful treatment of network architecture and network protocol design within a solid mathematical framework. Networks are required to provide good stable behavior in random environments. This textbook provides the tools needed to make this happen. It provides needed foundations in optimization, control, and probabilistic techniques. It then demonstrates their application to the understanding of current networks and the design of future network architectures and protocols. This is a "must" addition to the library of graduate students performing research in networking, and engineers researching future network architectures and protocols."
Donald F. Towsley, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"Chapters follow the logical flow of designing layers of the network. Each chapter brings another aspect of network modeling. Although many algorithms are presented in the form of pseudo-code only, no clarity is lost and the book can be recommended to programmers seeking a solid reference ... Exercises are interesting and feel like real research problems. With solutions available to instructors, this book is also an excellent choice as a textbook for a performance evaluation course. The most appreciated feature of this work is its freshness: all the examples and exercises are up to date. This makes classic theories more attractive to students, who can see the real applications of complex mathematics, and motivate[s] them to dive into the exciting world of network optimization and control."
