Fairstein's 25-year stint as head of the Sex Crimes Unit in the Manhattan DA's office once again makes for an authoritative and fact-filled mystery (her fifth after The Deadhouse) featuring alter-ego assistant DA Alexandra Cooper. "Coop" is an attractive workaholic in her 30s, ambivalent about her current relationship with an always-on-the-road NBC correspondent. While she's attending a reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, new Met director Pierre Thibodaux pulls her aside and asks for help with a recent crisis: a customs security dog found that a Met sarcophagus ready for shipment back to Cairo contained the corpse of a young female researcher from the Cloisters, the Met's medieval branch. Coop calls her usual NYPD sidekick detectives, brash Mike Chapman and burly Mercer Wallace, and the trio sets out to search among the museum's bookish staff and rich benefactors for a killer with a motive. In the meantime, Coop and Chapman, who should be a couple but don't know it yet, lecture one another on ancient history and contemporary law, and place bets on Jeopardy questions. Readers also learn about such subjects as Inuit funeral rituals, the average growth rate for human hair, the habits of stalkers and rapists and modern techniques of sadomasochism. Fairstein returns with another thriller starring popular protagonist Alexandra Cooper (Deadhouse), a Manhattan assistant district attorney. This time out, she and her sidekick, cop Mike Chapman, are drawn into a particularly mysterious case: a Metropolitan Museum of Art intern is found dead in a sarcophagus, and though she's been dead for months, her body is perfectly preserved. When it is discovered that she died of arsenic poisoning, the plot thickens. This is fun reading; Fairstein's fast pacing, colorful suspects, and museum settings (the Museum of Natural History is also featured) make her book reminiscent of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's Relic. Alex is, however, a weak point; she's just as fastidious and stilted here as she was in previous outings. Her relationship with pretty-boy newscaster Jake, her flashy L.A. entertainment lawyer best friend, and private jet rides to her vacation home in Martha's Vineyard combine to make her a poster girl for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Fairstein has already had some success with this series; if she imbues Alex with more depth, she'll have a real winner. Despite that flaw, this is recommended for public libraries.

THE BONE VAULT should be opened by all readers.

Spending time with Alex Cooper and Mike Chapman and to learn more about New York City landmarks and institutions is enough of a reason to buy the book. This time it's the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. When the body of a young intern at the Cloisters is found in a sarcophagus on a ship bound for Egypt, Alex and Mike find the inner workings of the museums, not to mention its many hidden room both fascinating and possibly deadly. An intriguing tale after which one will never look at the institutionalized collection of art and artifacts, including human bones, in quite the same way. It's also a view of why other cultures and countries may not look upon the European/American penchant for "collecting" with quite the reverence that collectors have come to expect. As always Fairstein intersperses other cases that the Sex Unit of the District Attorney's office is investigating. There is also some interesting, but very subtle movement in the relationship between Alex and Mike. Although books rarely cause me to cry, Alex's recounting of the events of September 11 from her viewpoint as well as from Mike's brought tears to my eyes. It's a beautiful and heartrending account that has nothing to do with the story, but fits in beautifully with the novel. It is also a story that I imagine the author had to tell. "The Bone Vault" is a wonderful book that is available this month. Highly recommended for all who enjoy a great story, fully realized characters and fine writing.

This is without a doubt Linda Fairstein's best novel yet

In 2002, Linda Fairstein retired from her position as head of the Sex Crimes Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney's office. She is the Real Deal --- a real life prosecutor who can write. She's also blonde and gorgeous. Now go ahead and tell me life is fair!
With each of her five novels since FINAL JEOPARDY (her first), she has displayed an increasingly smooth storytelling style uniquely her own. If her books read a lot like true crime, it's because she knows her material down to the most intimate detail. Fairstein's daily work routine has become the stuff of television legend, via Law & Order, particularly Law & Order: SVU, which stands for the department she originated --- not in fiction but in real life. She has made an enormous contribution to the now-safer streets of New York City and, with her retirement, will certainly be missed. We who like to read are lucky because we now have her full-time attention as a writer.
In her fifth outing with her DA protagonist, Alexandra Cooper, Linda Fairstein takes us into a fascinating behind-the-scenes world at the Metropolitan Museum and its offshoot for medieval art history, The Cloisters, as well as the New York Museum of Natural History. They have been planning a 3-way cooperative exhibit on Beastiaries, Real and Imagined (a fictional exhibit that sounds like such a great idea, I wanted to see it for myself). The victim is a young, promising museum employee of The Cloisters who worked on that exhibit. Her perfectly preserved body is found inside an ancient limestone sarcophagus that was about to be shipped abroad, as part of a large shipment of art on exchange from the Metropolitan. Within 24 hours of the body's discovery, the Met's famous Director has resigned. He claims his resignation has no relationship whatever to the finding of the body but, of course, Alex and her team members, Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace, are not so easily convinced.
An autopsy reveals that the victim died of arsenic poisoning and that she had been dead for almost six months. How did the body come to be in such perfect condition after such a long time? More interesting speculations occur when the head of the museum's Egyptian Collection leaves to attend a "mummy congress" in Chile --- it seems he is the world's foremost expert on mummification. And so onward, the story goes.
Linda Fairstein is deadly serious about her concern over crime (sex crimes in particular) and her novels reflect this concern. But THE BONE VAULT is, nevertheless, fun to read. It is no small achievement to be able to write heavy stuff with a light touch, but she has pulled it off for much of the book. If you enjoy going to museums, this will be a treat for you. Even if museums aren't quite your ideal for crime story enrichment, you'll find a lot of other little tidbits that add to the narrative. These tidbits include insight into Alan Dershowitz's Martha's Vineyard beach habits and in what movie you might catch a glimpse of William Shatner's pubic hair ... if you have sharp eyes and are inclined to look.
THE BONE VAULT is Linda Fairstein's best yet.

A surprisingly fun suspense novel

I picked this book up looking for a quick read and expecting a sort of Da Vinci Code type suspense thriller. I did find a quick read but the novel was no were close to the quality of Da Vinci Code.

Instead, I found a surprisingly fun novel, not just about the Metropolitan Museum but more focused on the Natural History Museum in NYC. While I was expecting another art murder mystery, I found instead learning about the history of the Natural History Museum set admist a murder at the Met.

Fairstein was a quick read and typical of mass produced mystery novels but this one had an edge that I found alluring. I was able to appreciate the novelist's research on the museums as well as her writing abilities. While they might not be Pulitizer Prize winning it was an enjoyable read.

The novel was a little predictable and the killer pretty obvious but I still found it fun and rather enjoyable. A good beach read.

Superb charts of Irish Crochet motifs!

Excellent resource of CHARTED patterns for Irish Crochet motifes for experienced knitter. Charts are superb! They are like musical notation for someone who can play an instrument :)
Unfortunately I can't read Chinese just yet, but this books keeps me a nice company since I've got it :)

Irish crochet goldmine

This is an exciting book for lovers of Irish crochet. There are 127 patterns. Pictures are excellent. The book is written Chinese, but there is no need for translation. The diagram are very well drawn and easy to read. Highly recommend.

Essential, especially for white women

This book is very powerful and very inviting. Tamara Winfrey Harris systematically delineates and debunks every major historical and current-day stereotype about Black women. She pulls no punches and draws a clear and direct timeline of how these stereotypes came about, how they hurt, how they're wrong, and what story should replace them. I'm sure this book is going to be a cool drink of water to Black women who have been living under and around and through these stereotypes their whole lives, but it was really healing and freeing for me as a white woman to read it listed out so directly and clearly. Especially important were the consistent reminders that we live in a system that is constantly pitting white women and Black women against each other to the detriment of both. I think it's easy as a white woman to feel like we want to be friends with Black women but know we don't really get what's essentially different for them just in daily living. And how can you be a true friend if you don't understand someone else's core experiences? Reading this book means you don't have to be playing catch-up on all the basic stereotypes that fuel the big hurts and little microaggressions that happen to Black women every day, and it can help you avoid hurtful things when you're not trying to be hurtful.

Winfrey Harris did a brilliant, quixotic thing, by making her conclusion (spoiler alert, #sorrynotsorry) about the strength of Black women in community supporting each other, while making that the foundation of the book. She found other women who were doing work in the various areas she was exploring, and let them tell their stories and use their own work to prove her theories. She gave them a platform that strengthened hers at the same time. This book is sobering but hopeful, academic and personal, and just a delight.

The mechanics of the book: Winfrey Harris has a confident, easy writing style and a clear way of explaining complex concepts in a way that people new to the concepts and people immersed in them can understand. She wrote exactly what she needed to say, so the book is shorter than it would have been had she padded it out into a bunch of repetition, and I really appreciated that it was all signal and no noise. It's really accessible but not simplistic or patronizing, so it's a perfect book to teach in women's studies, American studies, sociology, and African-American studies courses. I'm not sure kids below high school age would get it, but for 10th grade and up it's totally appropriate and important.

Would recommend for a feminist newbie

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is not well-versed in the (contemporary) issues Black women face in the U.S. Namely, if you are familiar with the works of Black feminist scholars (e.g. Crenshaw and Collins), this book won't provide you with new information, save for topical media/pop culture analysis and personal interviews with Black women. However, if your feminist scope is limited to the experiences of privileged white women, this book will be quite informative, giving you a broad overview of stereotypes of and societal judgements upon Black women. The author writes in an conversational style that makes complex issues very accessible to the reader.

Also, as a replacement for (or supplement to) this book - for anybody who wants more historical background on this subject matter, and/or is more comfortable with academic writing - I would recommend Angela Davis' Women, Race & Class and bell hooks' Ain't I a Woman?.

Everyone, read this!!!!

Everyone -- yes, everyone -- needs to read this book. Also, fellow teachers, consider adopting this as a textbook. I am using it as a required textbook for a community college pre-transfer level English class. My students are racially and ethnically diverse, so we are also reading, discussing, and writing about the issues raised in this and other books in my class. I also bought the audio book and posted the audio and supplemental related video content on our class Moodle page. My favorite quote from this book has become the motto of our class: "The world will tell you who you are, until you tell the world who you are" (Harris, 12).

A wealth of good information.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in understanding demisexuality whether you're demi or know someone who is. It's well written and very informative which is important because demi- and asexuality aren't generally well understood or accepted.(for example: my computer keeps highlighting demisexuality as a spelling error as I'm typing this)

Identity politics

“All About Demisexuality” is a difficult e-book to review. The pseudonymous author, who calls herself Arf, tries to explain the ins and outs of “demisexuality”. It can be seen as a sexual orientation, or indeed the lack of one, since demisexuality is said to be part of the “asexual spectrum”. Above all, it seems to be a peculiar Queer identity, and hence part of the “identity politics” of the contemporary left-liberal (or Left Coast) scene. Demisexuals even have a flag of their own, depicted on the front cover of this e-booklet! The difficulty lies in Arf's confused description of what demisexuality is supposed to be. Perhaps demisexuals *are* confused, but pointing that out could be seen as insensitive. Paradoxically, it's also possible that many demisexuals are quite normal (they are, so to speak, on the “normal diversity spectrum” sexually speaking), but apparently that too could be seen as insensitive, since it's said to “invalidate” their experiences. This review is written from the perspective of someone who doesn't consider himself demisexual and who sincerely doesn't understand...

On the face of it, demisexuality is easy to define. It means that a person only feels sexual attraction towards another person with whom they have developed a deep emotional bond. In other words, demisexuals aren't attracted to just any luscious blonde female (or muscular male, or exotically clad trans-person) who happens to cross their way, nor are they attracted to pop stars or centerfold girls they haven't even met. But is this really so unusual? I suspect that demisexuality in *this* sense is relatively common, and that it has been erased due to the obsession with all things sexual (promiscuous and perverted sex in particular) characteristic of modern or postmodern Western culture. In such a climate, “demisexuals” are bound to feel alienated.

However, as the booklet progresses, the reader starts to wonder what exactly is being described. Apparently, demisexuals can masturbate, watch porn, feel a strong desire for sex, engage in nude cuddling, have kinky fetishes and even engage in penetrative or oral sex “for the joy of the physical pleasure” (i.e. without the emotional bond mentioned above) without losing their status as demisexuals in good standing! But if so, what on earth is the difference between a demisexual and a normally sexual person (or even an over-sexed one)? A person who whips casual partners for the joy of kinky pleasure doesn't strike me as being on any “asexual” spectrum at all… Other sections of “All About Demisexuality” imply that most demisexuals are either completely indifferent towards sex, or find it highly repulsive. This seems to be yet another phenomenon, not necessarily connected to the emotional-bonding demisexuals and completely unconnected to the physical pleasure/kink patrol.

Finally, one gets a strong feeling when reading Arf's descriptions that many demisexuals are socially awkward or extremely unsure of their feelings. The pamphlet, written by a young adult, seems geared towards teenagers at the very threshold of puberty, who for whatever reason don't understand what's happening to them. Arf believes that both neurotypicals and autists can be demisexual, which I suppose is true (no matter how you define the term), but it's hard not to suspect that autism might nevertheless be a cause in many cases. Schizoid Personality Disorder is also strikingly similar to at least some descriptions of demisexuality found in this booklet.

Ultimately, however, my main objection to “All About Demisexuality” is the insistence that we are dealing with yet another “identity” or “minority” which wants to be recognized alongside all the others, presumably as a subset of the Queer category, or perhaps as an independent group alongside other sexual minorities (as in the expressions LGBTIA, LGBTIQAP, LGBTQIA and other variants where the “A” sometimes stands for the asexual spectrum). I admit that I consider this particular kind of liberal politics (if that's what it is) deeply problematic, even somewhat disturbing. One of many objections I have is the “special snowflake” factor, where everyone declares him/her/xerself a demisexual since that's the cool thing to do. In other words, we are dealing with subcultures (which are fluid) rather than real, essential personality types.

“All About Demisexuality” is well-written and probably must reading if you want to know how self-identified demisexuals view themselves (it seems to be the only such pamphlet available), but I admit that it's underlying thesis didn't convince me…
