The book also includes writings by each of the artists, an introduction by Catherine de Zegher, seven essays by distinguished contributors, and brief statements from five contemporary artists.

If you are searching for voices in art that speak for mysticism, creativity and depth, go no further than this book. A smart book connecting the lives of 3 key artists who are often over looked for their male counterparts, this book is essential reading. Also, if you are into patterns in nature, alchemy, inner transformation through the creative process or healing, there's not a better collect to start with as an introduction to these three artists.

Opening the Doors of perception

With a few notable exceptions including M.C. Escher, Dali, and a few others, I'd never really thought of drawing or painting in terms of being a means to an end other than self expression. Af Klint, Kunz, and Martin came from three different parts of the world and from three different generations. Each of them had a slightly different approach to drawing. What they had in common was that they used drawing as a means to explore the inner universe of consciousness and perception. In that regard, they were way, way, way, ahead of their time.

It might be a stretch to call Carl Jung an artist, but he did the same thing through the exploration of dreams. Likewise, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, and their cohorts aren't usually considered artists, yet they too explored consciousness and the nature of existence (albeit by different means)along the same lines as the three women represented here.

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in drawing.

There's an extra reward for those who also happen to be interested in the exploration of the mind, perception, and ultimately, a quest for spirituality.

About the Author
YOKO ISHIHARA is a certified nutritionist and chef, having earned her degree from Japan's prestigious Kagawa Nutrition University. Ishihara-sensei contributed the recipes and notes to this book, and as a mother of three, knows nearly as much about manga as she does about cooking.

CHIHIRO HATTORI is best known as the artist whose delightful illustrations in Manga University's Kanji de Manga series have taught thousands of students how to read and write Japanese. An avid cook, she created some of the cute bento designs in this book, and has been known to sneak an Usagi Ringo or two into the lunch her husband carries to work.

Great book for bento

I am active on LJ's bento community and was happy to find this book. It is GREAT if you are into bento. There isn't much out there in English for bento (I have several Japanese bento cookbooks), and this has very clear, easy to understand instructions for all kinds of Japanese recipes, and includes a whole bento section on how to pack a box and suggestions of what to include. Step by step instructions for making a train bento, and garden bento, also instructions for making several decorative foods to go in bento.

It's organized really well, with recipes and illustrations, then a page of text that tells about the recipe or food item - history, culture, stuff like that. For example, I finally learned about those traditional bento of scrambled egg, ground meat and sliced snow peas over rice. They're called Soboro, and there are some examples of making pretty bento with that. The recipes look easy enough that my 12-year-old said she wanted to try some.

All in all, I wish I'd found this book a year ago when I started being interested in bento, but it's not just for newbies. I am seeing recipes in here that I really want to try, including some cute bento ideas that I haven't seen or thought of. Lots and lots of recipes, it's a thicker book than I expected.

If you are a big Manga fan, you might expect the book to be read back to front/right to left, Manga-style, but it's not. It's American manga, which is fine with me. Very easy to read. Much more helpful and "how to" than the (very cute) "Face Food" book.

Very cute, with easy-to-follow instructions. Be aware, however, that the results may not be quite to your liking. We've tried Anko Paste (beans must soak a day ahead, contrary to instructions), dango (handle dough gently, and they should be eaten fresh), okonomiyaki (too much mayo, and too much dashi), jagatama (pretty good), and yakitori (hold the miso, use less egg, & broil or steam).

This book is so stinkin' CUTE!

This book is so stinkin' CUTE! I can't believe it, it's adorable. Now, it's not like the world needs yet another version of the Little Red Hen, but this is a sweet Christmas version of the story and definitely worth the read. McGrath has integrated the holiday them nicely into her version of the tale. The little red elf is a really hard worker and she has some of the laziest friends in the North Pole.

Once upon a time, there was a reindeer, a penguin, a hare, and a little red elf. They all lived together in a comfy, cozy workshop.
The reindeer liked to snooze in the straw.
The penguin liked to relax in the bathtub.
The hare liked to hibernate by the hearth.
That left the little red elf to get all the workshop work done.

She was filling some bird feeders, by herself, when she found a pinecone. Since none of her friends would help her plant it, she decided to do the job herself. When the time came to water it or bring it in to the workshop once it had grown, she was on her own.

By the time she had strung the lights, decorated the tree, and baked cookies for Santa without any help, she had gotten a bit frustrated but tried to keep her holiday cheer. Of course, when she needed help to open all of those presents her friends came running.

"I will!" said the reindeer.
"I will!" yelled the penguin.
"I want the big one!" screamed the hare.

This is the point where the little red elf loses it and yells that she is going to open the presents by herself. Of course her friends are shocked and begin to cry. The little red elf feels terrible, apologizes, and lets the open the gifts. Boy did they dive right in. Inside every box from Santa was a Little Red Hen doll. The reindeer, penguin, and hare are confused (as are some younger readers) but the little red elf understands and thinks they've gotten the perfect gifts.

It's a cute story but I had two tiny issues. I wish there had been a bit more discussion regarding the reindeer, penguin, and hare's horrible and selfish behavior. Even my younger kids were aghast; we just talk about it a bit in class, so it's not really a big deal. (If you're looking for a version where the animal's realize how rude they've been, pick up Philemon Sturges's The Little Red Hen (Makes a pizza). ) My other issue is the ending - younger kids don't get it. I think the ending's humor is a little bit too sophisticated for the little ones.

The real star of this book, the entire reason you want to check it out and pour over it with your kid (or by yourself), is Bonnet's absolutely scrumptious and adorable illustrations. She uses a style of drawing that I tend to associate with Japan (but it's not manga or chibi style) and she throws in fantastically funny little details. I just want to hug this book.

Verdict:
I will say it again, this book is so stinkin' cute!! Bonnet's illustrations are just wonderful and really make this Christmas version of The Little Red Hen worth the read. The Little Red Elf is a sweet holiday book that you should pick up from the library.

In an off-take of the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen, the little red elf finds some pine cones and plants them and waters them till a pine tree grows. She brings the tree inside and decorates it with lights and ornaments. Again and again, she asks her friends for help. But again and again, no one will help; and the little red elf does it all by herself. But, finally, the penguin, the reindeer and the hare all cry to help open the presents, only to reveal a collection of little red hens. Children ages 4-7 will embrace this Christmas tale.

Great Christmas twist to Little Red Hen

I wanted to expand our Christmas book collection this year, and upon recommendation of a blog I frequent, I ordered The Little Red Elf. It's a cute story with great illustrations, fun humor, and the great message of the Little Red Hen (with a Christmas theme). My kids are 4 & 6 and they both enjoyed it. I did too!

I received a free copy from Story Cartel for my honest review.
These short stories have the potential to be great but they aren't there yet. There are multiple errors in grammar, the text and conversations are stilted and don't flow very well. The last story in particular was very confusing and I had to muddle through it to try and make some sense of it.
My suggestion to this writer is to read the book many times and fix the problems before publishing. Give a copy to friends and family that will give you honest feedback and offer suggestions on how to make the stories better.
I would read more from her in the hopes that the writing gets cleaned up. She has some great ideas and I hope she goes far.

I was asked by this author for an honest review through Story Cartel, and here it is:
The book itself was an intriguing read, the short story format allowing for a continuous shift in theme and character dynamics. I admit there were certain points where the direction of a story fell flat due to the cut off length and lack of development. But I find this to be a good thing. Whenever I read a collection of short stories, I actually feel more at ease knowing that there will be some that I will dislike in the mix. The fact that all these novellas were written by the same author adds to this appeal, as I felt the variation of styles truly reflected the author's attempts to expand their writing horizons. The fact that I lost interest in some stories is not meant to discourage, but to show that the author has more skill with certain literary approaches than others.
I found that the Science Fiction collection engaged me the most with its unique spins on human character, and one story in particular that stood out was Veronica-it had a great concept that made me contemplate other perspectives of death. I suppose I could say the same for the tales in the Human Interest section, although there were a few points where the narration began to grow a bit odd, but in a whimsical fashion, not grammar based or tone wise.
The section that I was most wary of was Comedy. It's not that the plots themselves were weak, but the exposition, in particular with Case of the Scheming Widow, overtook the plot and by the time the story ended, I was left feeling...blocked? In other words, I felt as though the climax was too soon, the ending too rushed. However, that is not meant to describe the quality of the writing itself, as with all short stories, there is the need to make it a stand alone account, with all the requirements of a novel condensed into a few pages.
Still, this was an entertaining read that distracted me from my bus rides, and I thank the author for that.
I look forward to seeing more.

Into the Light is a collection of nine short stories, three each under the respective headings of Science Fiction, Human Interest, and Comedy. The first two selections, “Veronica” and “Undo” are quite good, interesting and well written. The first is a clever tale of the power of human memory; the second a lesson in the cyber dangers of seeking a lost love. The remaining stories do not measure up to the promise of these two. The third Science Fiction entry, “Dream Diary” is another seeking love cyberspace romance in which reality duels with imagination.
The Human Interest stories are not all riveting. “Speechless Love” is a predictable “feel good” story. “She Comes in the Rain” approaches the quality of the earlier two stories and is a rather sweet story of an encounter between a young, hungry female ghost and an old woman. “Bridge of Memories,” a sort of implausible tale of a meeting of former lovers is both unsurprising and underdeveloped.
I found the “Comedy” stories neither very humorous nor intriguing. “Anatomy of a Divorce” is a sad and sort of pointless discussion of two unlikeable people who probably really deserved each another. The last two pieces, “How to Lose a Fortune in 10 Weeks” and “Case of the Scheming Widow” deal respectively with the shaggy dog story of a British gent implausibly trying vainly to dispose himself of his rich bounty and an unbelievably too competent Joe Friday detective who solves a murder mystery, saves the day and gets the girl in the end. These stories are complicated and contrived and need trimming and refocusing.
P. Wish, the author of Into the Light, employs a short sentence, staccato style that seems to work better in the short and tightly edited stories but remains less effective in the longer ones. There are some beautiful literary flashes shown by the book’s author. These include the following: “The white, diaphanous curtains danced in the wind. Shadow looked at it as if it were an old memory, fading away;” “The glass window shivered under the chill of the night;” “The singer’s pouting lips pronounced each vowel;” and an insecure female character ”hiding behind a mask of success.” These flashes, however, are mixed with some clich�d and/or uninspired language. One character gets “weak in the knees” while another “wailed like a banshee.” One story begins with the repetitive, “It was a cold Sunday evening. I walked on the cold streets.” It seems that the only sign of flirtation any women characters can give is by “fluttering” their eyelashes.
Finally, this short book could have been better proofread. I found too many instances in which words were missing from sentences. And while this never makes the ultimate meaning of any story unclear it is disturbing nonetheless.

Great job. This was a "ripping good yarn" that was true. As a London lawyer called in 85 and who married the little girl who lived next to Frankie I connected to every morbid paragraph. I'm retroactively frightened for my kids who began life in 83. I will lose sleep.

Saying that I enjoyed the read would be putting it in the wrong ...

I just finished “Murder City” and can say that I was fascinated by the story---and the darkness of it all. Saying that I enjoyed the read would be putting it in the wrong context. Well written is a better recommendation. More importantly, the overview of serial crime and the capability of a deranged mind or minds to move though an otherwise unsuspecting society is exposed. Are the same crimes happening in and around us today? Arntfield makes you wonder if they can ever be stopped.

Great insights! And a splendid vision of how things can be.

There are many books on Leadership that have little to say. Sinek's book has both new insights and an inspiring vision.

Sinek begins with biology and outlines the roles of chemicals - specifically Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin - and how evolution has dictated why we generate them and how we respond to them. Endorphins mask pain and help give you a `runner's high' or the intense satisfaction after a tough work out.

Dopamine leads to your `feeling good' upon accomplishing a goal whether that is bringing home dinner while evading sabre-toothed tigers or doing a bang-up job on a major presentation. Think of endorphins and Dopamine as the `individual achievement' chemicals. We need them to excel at what we do.

Serotonin is what gives you a feeling of gratitude and affection for the persons who supported you in your endeavors and the good feeling as they applaud you. Oxytocin is `love' chemical. It gives you the warm fuzzies you get when you hug someone or have a deep meaningful conversation. Think of Serotonin and Oxytocin as the `social' chemicals.

We, as humans, need both the individual achievement and social chemicals to progress. What has happened, unfortunately, in our society is that mores and values have changed to emphasize the former to such an extent that a deadly imbalance has been created. It is truly toxic - your job may be killing you. I used to think this was hyperbole but Sinek presents enough evidence for me to revise this opinion.

Central to Sinek's arguments is the `Circle of Safety'. When a sabre-toothed tiger attacks a herd of buffalos they gather together with their tails touching and horns out. Whichever direction that tiger attacks, it is met with impenetrable defense. This is the circle of safety. We want to feel that there are persons we can trust who will look out for us. Where we can let our guard down and be ourselves.

In such a trusting environment we can focus on doing the best we can and this greatly benefits both us, individually, the company. This feeling of `belonging' is what has disappeared from the corporate workplace to a large extent. It has been replaced by an ethos of `everyone for himself and the Devil take the hindmost'. And, sadly, even the `winners' in this environment are actually losers because of the personal price they pay in terms of insecurity and lack of meaningful relations, not to mention health side effects.

What I found really useful in the book is the way in which Sinek takes concepts from fields such as psychology and shows how they are relevant to what we experience in the workplace. I found these to be penetrating insights and they lead to many `aha' moments as well as to a change in the way I conduct some of my own programs.

For example, take the Milgram experiments. These are some of the best known - and most shocking - experiments in psychology and the implications are truly horrifying. In the early sixties, shortly after the Adolf Eichmann capture, trial and execution, there was a lively debate on whether Nazi collaborators were simply `following orders' or had a sense of responsibility and ownership for what they did.

Yale professor Stanley Milgram devised a series of experiments in which a volunteer was asked to deliver electric shocks to a subject each time he made an `error' in a lesson. Unbeknownst to the volunteer the subject was actually a confederate of the professor and an actor who affected great pain and suffering as the level of electric shocks increased. In reality there were no shocks and no pain but the volunteer did not know this.

When volunteers demurred from administering painful electric shocks the white gowned Milgram told them in various ways that they were required to continue even when they thought that the shocks they were administering were severely harmful to the subject.

The shocking result was that huge numbers of `normal' persons - readily or with mild trepidation - continued to administer potentially lethal shocks to subjects even as they howled with pain and demanded that they be released from the experiment. And this happened simply because they were told to do so by an `authority figure' with no threats or rewards for doing so.

Obviously this has great implications for why dictatorships form and survive and the debate on this continues to this day.

What Sinek points out is that this same experiment is played out in our companies every day at huge human toll. I had never thought of it in these terms before but parallel is exact. Many `managers' willingly take actions that they know will bring hardship and suffering to others - mass layoffs, reductions in benefits, changes in working conditions etc. - simply because they have been directed to do so. Even worse, we have evolved a business `philosophy' where formal directions are no longer necessary - this is simply the way to do things.

Sinek talks about how to bring the balance back in our workplace so both companies and individuals can thrive side by side in a symbiotic relationship. And he gives lots of examples such as the Barry Wehmiller companies where CEO Bob Chapman is dedicated to `building great people who do extraordinary things. And Charlie Kim, CEO of Next Jump who implemented a policy of lifetime employment.

I particularly like his comparison of the results achieved by James Sinegal, CEO of Costco and Jack Welch the much touted former CEO of General Electric. Welch's paradigm of pitting executives against each other created a high stress environment and the gains were short-lived and unsustainable.

In contrast Sinegal built a strong `circle of safety' for his people, paid wages which were nearly double those at Walmart and did many things to engender loyalty and trust. Costco employees are loyal and have built it into the second largest retailer in the country and the growth is both balanced and continuing.

This book will make you think differently about the business systems that prevail in our society and also give you a way to make the workplace more humane.

A very different view of management

I previously read "Start With Why" and really enjoyed it. That book helped to completely reframe the way I viewed business and the big picture. I was very excited to get a chance to read this book. Initially, I thought it would give a fuller explaination of how the Marines create greater sensitivity in their leaders. In a way, it did this although actually, the book was much more of a scientific study on the chemistry of management. I think it's interesting how Simon related biological chemicals that we all have to better management. The concept of a Circle of Safety and treating each employee as if you are their second parent is also interesting. I think in particular the end of the book where Simon talks about how the current generation feels entitled to quick success is very enlightening and very true. The ultimate point of the book is that if a leader watches out for their people and commits their whole organization to serve others and each other, everyone wins. It's easier said than done, but it's a very good reminder of the importance of going beyond just chasing financial gain.

(Re) Stating the Obvious--Interesting Read But Nothing New

I really tried to give this book a higher rating but just couldn't. While I can't quibble with anything Sinek says, he says nothing that hasn't been said by dozens of other authors. The point of his book: Leaders need to care for others, protect them from harm, provide opportunities for them to grow and develop, create a vision of something to believe in that's larger than themselves, and take an interest--a genuine interest--in the well-being of their followers.

There's a great deal of hand wringing in this book, but almost no "how-to" that can be applied in everyday organizations. He even uses the word "polemic" late in the book as a description of what he's writing. We all know what needs to be done, but very few of us are doing it.

Yes, it was interesting to read about brain chemicals and current brain research. And it was okay to read some of his comparisons between/among companies that see profit as the purpose versus those companies that see profit as a means to greater purpose. The problem is that all of this could have been stated in a pamphlet, rather than a 216-page book. And, just as his TED talk on "Start With Why" offered everything in that book, his 99U video offers everything in this book--in less than 45 minutes.

I recommend lots of books to students in my leadership development classes but, in this case, I'll recommend that the students watch Sinek's videos and save their money.
