A part of histroy

I usually don't write book reviews, I find that a lot of times they robe the reader from the chance to dig into a book and find what they seek without the voice of the reviewer echoing in there subconscious, at least that's what happens to me. Which is why I'll refrain from any pointed spoilers in this review.

I have, personally, read many fairytale/folktale collections, in fact most recently (before reading this gem) I had read a book on Irish folktales. I remember thinking while reading it "it is heartbreaking that this has never been done in my country". Therefore my joy in reading this book was unparalleled for two reasons. On one hand I am overjoyed by reading a good book, and this is a good book, and on the other I feel as though this book is more than just a collection of stories, it is a historical document, that effectively imprints the folktales of the Syrian people into documentation. As the authoress notes our society has become computer game and TV obsessed, so what more important time than now to have these stories forever documented into the treasury of our world. This book saves a part of history that isn't political or war obsessed, giving generations to come an idea that there is more to there history than a red page.
I really highly recommend this book to any reader, of an age and any background.

i dont really read or know much about my country's history , or lets say i just wasn't really interested cause no book really grabbed my attention but eventually this one did and i don't regret reading it what so ever.it talks about the syrian history but in a very different and interesting way which is really catchy and makes me and many other teens who are not really interested in history actually enjoy reading the book and wanna finish it till the end.the author Muna Imady made this book in a way where teens and adults enjoy reading it which really isn't easy to do cause i never imagined to read any of my parents books.i have to say that is a very successful book and i hope she has new books coming out soon.

Syrian Culture, Recipes, and Stories

I have been interested in folktales from other cultures since I was a small child. I loved hearing the stories of good and evil creatures, and the way the story unfolded never failed to captivate and inspire my imagination. Reading Muna Imady's stories in her book "Syrian Folktales" brought me back to a childhood filled with amazing stories. I was thrilled to discover that recipes, riddles and a small slice of Syrian culture was included with the folktales. I enjoyed this book greatly, and I hope that Ms. Imady continues to gather these tales and other pieces of culture before they are forgotten.

Great Supplement to the New QP Bible

Many of the most used problems in Quantum Mechanics were created by Russian physicists in the early 1960's. Without true quantum computing available perhaps for nearly a decade to come, formulating problems, then explaining answers, is extremely difficult! Dover re-publishes many of the oldies but goodies, but in this field, the oldies are also the current favorites, and just as tough as they were 50 years ago.

This book, and most like it, are pretty sketchy and need a LOT of outside help to "get." Exploring Quantum Mechanics: A Collection of 700+ Solved Problems for Students, Lecturers, and Researchers is the new monolith, or bible, of these types of problems, and is nearly 1,000 pages INCLUDING detailed explanations of how the problems are solved. Before 700, many of the little, cheaper books by Dover etc. were unintelligible.

Now that 700 is out, many others are within reach along with this one, including: Problems in Quantum Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics), Problems and Solutions on Quantum Mechanics: Major American Universities Ph. D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions, Problems in Quantum Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics), The Many-Body Problem in Quantum Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics), Problems in Quantum Mechanics: With Solutions, Problems and Solutions in Quantum Mechanics, and many others.

Taking the "cheap" Dovers (search problems in quantum mechanics on Amazon for more), you can add up to about 300 total problems with repetition, so you can see how the 700 text is truly amazing, and covers 1950 to today! By the time you buy 8 Dovers, you've spent what you would on the new 700 text, so depending on your need, I'd consider 700 if you really want one place to see them all, including the best solutions anywhere.

beautiful book but has some annoying issues

I wanted to give this book a 5 star rating, however, there are some very annoying publication issues with it that prevented it from getting the 5 stars.

I've been wanting to get the original Alla Prima but was holding off because of the price. Then I found Alla Prima II and it was supposed to have all the original stuff plus more, and the price was more in my budget. Since I have not had the privilege of seeing the original, I cannot compare it to this one. My first impression when I opened the box was it was a beautiful book and I couldn't wait to start reading it. I've only gotten about 70 pages read so far, and I am very happy with the content, it's well written and informative. I've already gained knowledge in being able to isolate a problem area and how to dissect it to find a fix. I can't wait to get through the rest of the book.

now the annoying part ... there are typos in the text that show poor proofing prior to publication. It certainly doesn't take away from the content of the text, you can still understand the intent of the sentence. For me though, I find it very annoying to see it in an otherwise beautiful, fairly expensive, book.

***Update - I contacted the press and heard back from them, they tell me they have had the book re-edited and the 2nd run of printing (in progress now) will have the majority of the typos fixed. So if it will bother you as much as me, you may want to find out which printing you are purchasing before ordering.

I am Not Worthy

I am not worthy to critique Richard Schmid's work nor his writing.
Am brand new to painting, in fact I went out and purchased paints after I had read this book.
If nothing else, READ Chapter 8, then do the color pallets. It will blow your mind if you are new to this artistic form.
I wish I lived next door to Mr. Schmid. He would probably put up a barbed wire fence and buy a guard dog to keep me from bothering him.

About the Author

Anna Leon-Guerrero is Professor of Sociology at Pacific Lutheran University in Washington. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She teaches courses in statistics, social theory and social problems. Her areas of research and publications include family business, social welfare policy, and social service program evaluation. She is also the co-author of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society, and co-editor of Contemporary Readings in Social Problems.

About the Author
"Tahir al-Bayati (1937 - ) has a B.A. degree in English from Baghdad University and holds Cambridge Lower and Higher Certificates in English which he obtained during his studies in the United Kingdom. He has participated in several English courses, especially in one held at the University of Birmingham, U.K. He has taught English for 33 years, starting at the formerly Nizamiyya Secondary (High) School for Boys in Baghdad, once the most exclusive and prestigious school in all of Iraq (read inside pages). Many non-English speaking students have benefitted from this book, many still do and many, many more will be benefitting. This is not an ordinary book by any standard. It is the product of efforts that lasted for many years, and you can come to this conclusion when you review its contents. The author taught English and has had a firsthand experience in the problems faced by those whose mother tongue is quite different from English. He has kept improving his work time and over again, so much so that the number of its reviews has exceeded seventeen. This is the first time this book is published in the United States where there are many people who need and can benefit from this great work. Yasin T. al-Jibouri (1946 - ), Editor of this book, earned his graduate degree from an American university in 1978 and has been writing, translating and editing numerous articles and books as well as editing newsletters, bulletins, magazines and books since January of 1974 when he started in Atlanta, Georgia, the publication of a bimonthly newsletter.
