About the Author
Anzia Yezierska (1882-1970)�was born in Poland and came to the Lower East Side of New York with her family in 1890 when she was nine years old.� By the 1920s she had risen out of poverty and become a successful writer of stories, novels―all autobiographical―and an autobiography, Red Ribbon on a White Horse (Persea). Her novel Bread Givers (Persea) is considered a classic of Jewish American fiction. Her acclaimed books also include�How I Found America: Collected Stories and The Open Cage. She died in 1970.

Mazel tov!!!!

This story, written in the early 1900s, about a family of Russian Jews living on NY's Lower East Side is predicable in it's ending and melodramatic in it's writing style, but it is an important book in two ways. First it shows what lfe was like in the late 1800s, early 1900's, when people struggles to make a living and live in this country while trying to hold on to the old ways, the ways of the country they left behind. We see this in the father, who wanbted to do nothing but study the Torah while his daughters supported him. In Russia this was accepted, the idea of the full time scholor whose only responsibility was to read , study and pray. He cannot accept the fact that there is no room for study only, everyone has to work to succeed, and it drives him to make very bad choices.

It is also a book concerned with feminist ideas and ideals. The youngest daughter does not want the life where work is the only thing she has. She wants an education, will not settle for an arranged marriage, wants to be a teacher, wants more than to just support her family. It forces her to leave home and live alone, to break away from her tyrant of a father, to reject easy marriages, to work her way through college and to finall succeed at becoming a teacher. The story is predicatable, you know she will succeed and finally meet a good man, but she also learns you have to balance the past with the present and future.

A very interesting book, you just have to remember when it was written, and not compoare her writing style to something you'd see written today.

"Bread Givers" by Anzia Yezierska was a delightful discovery. It is unique in modern literature, as a portrait of a poor Jewish immigrant family told through the perspective of the youngest daughter. Based very much on Yezierska's real life experiences, it is a testament that offers insight into a time past and into some very common experiences. While the overall picture is bleak, Yezierska weaves a thread of hope through all the despair in her main character's life.

Sara Smolinsky is the youngest daughter in a family of four daughters, headed by a strict Orthodox rabbi of a father, who lives to read and gain wisdom from the Torah. The women in his family are meant to support him in this effort, no matter the cost to their health or happiness. Sara watches as her father allows his wife and daughters to nearly kill themselves slaving for every scrap of money, food, and clothing, and then interfere in their love lives by choosing inadequate husbands for them. His wife and three oldest daughters give in to him, but Sara refuses to have her spirit broken, running away and working to educate herself so that she can fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.

Yezeriska was a gifted storyteller, crafting an extremely readable tale in simple prose, ignited every so often with profound illuminations regarding life and love. While it is terribly hard to like Reb Smolinsky for how he treats his family, Yezierska still allows readers to pass their own judgment rather than tell them what to think. It is an intimate portrait of the traditional world unable to compete with the new world that was unfolding in America at the time. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

I wanted to shake some sense into Sara's father

for being such a tyrant, for spoiling his daughters' wedding plans, and for RUINING their lives -- and believe me-- that kind of stuff REALLY went on in those days! And I wanted to shake some sense into her mother for PUTTING UP WITH THIS!!!

Sara Smolinsky's life most probably parallels Anzia's real life. And if that is true, then I have the UTMOST respect for Sara/Anzia who against all odds, and especially as a woman back in the 1920's, found a place for herself and worked VERY hard to get that education and respect and "the good life" that all the middle-class American kids took for granted.

Someone reading this book today -- who has not read any books on the Immigrant experience or who has not become aquainted with Immigrant life in America in the early 20th Century -- wouldn't have a CLUE as to what it was really like back then, and to them this book would perhaps only serve to confuse or bore (!) them. Hopefully this book will not only shake readers out of their complacency, but it will encourage them to read other books about the Immigrant experience, such as "call it Sleep" by Roth.

The Bread-Givers is a great book.

About the Author
Matthew Flickstein is a psychotherapist, meditation teacher, and the founder of The Forest Way Insight Meditation Center in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. In more than twenty years of leading personal development workshops, he has trained almost 15,000 people across the US, including other teachers.

Bhante Gunaratana was ordained at the age of twelve as a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka, earned his PhD in philosophy from The American University, and has led meditation retreats, taught Buddhism, and lectured widely throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Extremely disappointing

I found this book to be very disappointing, especially since I absolutely loved this author's other book, "The Meditator's Atlas." (Which I highly recommend.)

The meditations talked about here are the same type of pop-psychology meditations that one finds in many other books. The "visualize yourself in a room talking with someone who's hurt you" type of thing.

This book recommends using Buddhist meditation to achieve your goals: Financial goals, career goals, etc. which seems to me to be the exact opposite of what Buddhism is about.

Perhaps this is a good book on meditation, but it's not a book about Buddhist meditation, except for the fact that it uses some techniques originally rooted it Buddhism.

A workbook to help tame your ox

“The Meditator's Workbook: A Journey To The Center” by Matthew Flickstein is a workbook, and to get the most out of it, one should not only read it, but do the meditations and exercises provided throughout the text. Doing this book, rather than just reading it, helps live life more fully, relieve stress and grief, and find personal inner-peace and well being. Obviously, these things can be said for meditation in general, regardless the type one practices or the source one learns from. But this book focuses on assisting one with these and more through the guided practice of meditation.

The book uses the Ten Oxherding Pictures as a base for the lessons along one's journey. As Flickstein states, “the ox symbolizes your true nature, the reality that lies beyond your conditioned and transitory existence . 'Herding the wild ox' is a metaphor for the progressive stages of realization that you will encounter during your quest for enlightenment.” I'll admit, it was this ox herding focus that drew me to purchasing the book. I've always liked these pictures, and their meaning, since learning about them from a friend as we gazed upon a series of pictures on the outside of a temple in Korea.

Using the pictures as a framework to organize the lessons, Flickstein guides the reader through a journey of finding oneself through a series of meditations. Accompanying these meditations, are questions to help you think about things that will help you find peace within yourself as well as figure out where you really want to go. There are also blank pages where you are encouraged to journal about the things you are thinking and meditating about.

There are some meditations and sections of this book that might not be as relevant to all readers, and some parts that some might not think are relevant until actually meditating on and pondering the questions the author poses. Throughout all of the exercises and meditations, one can learn about the self and become more mindful, which is the beginning to “enlightenment” or self-discovery. I'm not sure if we ever really become enlightened, but I do think we can discover more about ourselves and live happier more positive lives, and doing this book can help you with that.

Recommended to all who want to look within themselves a little deeper through meditation and self-discovery. Take this journey to help tame your ox.

for all time - the Lineman's Bible

This book was first printed in 1928, well after the trade first put on climbers. Since it's first printing it has been THE textbook for the lineman's trade. It has been used in virtually every apprentice program and was the companion of self taught linehands from the '30s on. Frequently updated, it remains the one place a linehand, beginner to veteran, can go for help. It has progressed with the technology of the trade, the regulations and codes, the materials, and the processes for doing very dangerous work in well thought out procedures that enable electric customers to maintain their service and even be unaware of the work of the power lineman.

A must have book for any and all linemen and groundmen. This is the book you use to measure how long you have been in the trade. You buy one when you start and keep updating till you die. It would be nice to see some other text books for this subject but they would have a tough time keeping up. It is the Bible for Line workers

In both collections, prominent American and European authors turn their attentions to the world of painting, and the results are generally thought-provoking and incisive. Frank O'Hara's piece on Jackson Pollock (McClatchy) is one of the best: Ernest Hemingway's on Joan Miro (Halpern) is one of the worst. The writers selected for inclusion by McClatchy are all 20th-century poets; Halpern's are predominantly prose writers. Learn words like matierre.

I don't read much art criticism, and this is an expensive book. I guess I feel the need to justify it's price.
This book will change your visual system, as it has writing by sensitive individuals.

Anyone who deals in words (like attorneys), will benefit from this book.

The main purpose of this book, asking poets to write about visual art, has been achieved.

This book is a remarkable study in perception and the transfer from one medium of art into another. There are few studies that present the theme of object to subject and image to word but this one succeeds in presenting powerful reflections on the matter. The illustration on this book is simply amazing. Exceptionally clear, abundant graphics and with good variation of views makes learning anatomy easier. It just amazes me that there are people out there willing to put in so much of their hearts and minds in to creating something so beautiful and helpful book.
