From Library Journal
It has sometimes been claimed that only painters should criticize painters; only poets, poets; and so on, as only those familiar with a field are qualified to examine it or its members. These two collections show clearly the questionable validity of this claim. In both collections, prominent American and European authors turn their attentions to the world of painting, and the results are generally thought-provoking and incisive. Frank O'Hara's piece on Jackson Pollock (McClatchy) is one of the best: Ernest Hemingway's on Joan Miro (Halpern) is one of the worst. The writers selected for inclusion by McClatchy are all 20th-century poets; Halpern's are predominantly prose writers. The selections in both books have been carefully chosen, and it would be wise to purchase both, as together they provide an excellent introduction to "crossover" criticism in the realm of the arts.Terry Skeats, Bishop's Univ. Review
"When poets turn their attention to arrangements of oil on canvas, we can expect the unexpected. . . . The ultimate value of this anthology and the reason it deserves a wider readership lie in the way it reminds us that a responsibility--and a joy--of the art writer, in [Richard] Howard's words, is to 'ransack the world in search of eloquence. . . one wants the terms by which to declare one's adoration.'"--Jan Heller Levi, "Artforum

From the Back Cover
'J. D. McClatchy has addressed a topic of real interest.....I think this is a book that many painters might well read with pleasure.'--Christopher Reid, Times Literary Supplement

Learn words like matierre.
By Shinobi
I don't read much art criticism, and this is an expensive book. I guess I feel the need to justify it's price.
This book will change your visual system, as it has writing by sensitive individuals.

Anyone who deals in words (like attorneys), will benefit from this book.

The main purpose of this book, asking poets to write about visual art, has been achieved.

A WONDERFUL BOOK
By William J. Havlicek, PhD
Here we have poets who wisely comment on painting and its impact on their poetry and lives in a general sense. This book is a remarkable study in perception and the transfer from one medium of art into another. There are few studies that present the theme of object to subject and image to word but this one succeeds in presenting powerful reflections on the matter. For anyone with an interest in aesthetics and the cross connections of prose and painting this is a must read! William Havlicek PhD
