Gaskell is a retired Consulting Engineer who wishes to share his 35 years of experience with both young engineers thinking of starting their own practice and those old hands who wish to improve their results. In essence, Jack’s readers discover “step-by-step” how to start and manage an “outstanding” Engineering Practice and exactly how to gain a reputation as an expert in their specialty. He was President of Gaskell Associates Consulting Engineers; now a Division of Thielsch Engineering, Inc. Jack is a graduate of Wentworth Institute, with an Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, and the University of Rhode Island, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Jack was a member of the following professional organizations: Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers, Providence Engineering Society, Electrical League of Rhode Island, Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, National Electromagnetic Field Testing Association and the National Academy of Forensic Engineers. He is a past President of the Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers and past President of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society, past Director of the Electrical League of Rhode Island and past Chairman of the Electrical Code Sub-Committee of the Rhode Island Building Code Standards Committee. Jack was honored by being selected "Engineer of the Year" by the Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers; “Man of the Year” by the Electrical League of Rhode Island; and “Freeman Award” recipient by the Providence Engineering Society for the purpose of recognizing major achievements in engineering. He spends winters at his home in North Palm Beach, FL, enjoying the warm weather and loosing at the game of pool. This book is great. It covers everything about consulting engineering from becoming an engineer to eventually selling your practice. My favorite chapters are Fee Proposals, Forensic Engineering, and Cashing Out.

Peter Coles is Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Nottingham and author of Einstein and the Birth of Big Science and Stephen Hawking and the Mind of God. He has co-written two textbooks on cosmology, and over a hundred technical articles on various aspects of the Big Bang theory.

A Great Introduction into Cosmology

If you have ever had an interest in the subject of cosmology, but could never find the time to read about it, I would highly recommend this book. Peter Coles, professor of Astrophysics at the University of Nottingham, has written a great “short introduction” to the subject.

I have read numerous books on cosmology and the universe, but I find Coles explanations of difficult concepts more understandable than what I have read in other books. I found myself absorbed in this book as I developed a clearer understanding of topics I had read about before.

He covers Einstein’s theories, the Big Bang, expanding space, matter in the universe, the cosmic structures that make up the universe, and the theory of everything. It's all very interesting, and I think you will be absorbed in it as I was.

An excellent brief introduction and overview of the science of cosmology. An interesting read.

Lately, I have begun to read the short books of the “a very short introduction” series. I just finished reading this 139 paperback (Cosmology: A very short introduction by Peter Coles) book and found it to be very interesting and informative. Even though these books are called “a very short introduction” they seem to be very detailed and do explore some advanced concepts of the subject.

I have always been fascinated with astronomy, physics, and cosmology. Even though I have read other volumes on these subjects, this little book provided a detailed overview of several cosmological topics. This book covered the following material: A brief history of cosmology, Einstein’s contribution (E=mc2), first principles, the expanding universe, the “Big Bang,” what’s the matter with the universe? Cosmic structures and a theory of everything.

If you are interested in exploring the many questions, with unfortunately few solutions and answers about the creation of the universe, and time and space, you should check out this book. I thought this text was a fascinating overview of the field.

An excellent introduction to cosmology

First, be warned that Amazon has mixed up two very different books here. Cosmology: A Very Short Introduction is the 139-page paperback I am reviewing. The editorial review refers to Cosmology: The Origin and Evolution of Cosmic Structures, a 520-page hardcover. At the time of writing this review, Amazon have the two books confused and you will find the same editorial and user reviews under each. So if you order one, make sure it's the right one.

Anyway, Cosmology VSI is excellent. Laymen's guides to physics usually resort to metaphors that are seriously misleading. The alternative is a highly mathematical approach that is inaccessible to most readers. Coles manages to simplify without misleading. Actually, some basic knowledge of physics is assumed, at least if you want a full understanding of what is being said, but it is never beyond high school level and most of the book does not require even that.

Covering relativity, quantum theory, particle physics and much else, this is a perfect introduction to a vast and profound topic. My only complaint: cosmology is a fast-changing subject. A new edition is needed very soon.

She reveals the fraught social processes by which individuals and families produce and maintain a modern jihad, and she shows how Muslim refugees have forged an Islamic notion of rights—a hybrid of global political ideals that adopts the language of human rights and humanitarianism as a means to rethink refugees’ positions in transnational communities. Jihad is no longer seen as a collective fight for the sovereignty of the Islamic polity, but instead as a personal struggle to establish the security of Muslim bodies against political violence, torture, and rape. Robinson describes how this new understanding has contributed to the popularization of jihad in the Kashmir region, decentered religious institutions as regulators of jihad in practice, and turned the families of refugee youths into the ultimate mediators of entrance into militant organizations. This provocative book challenges the idea that extremism in modern Muslim societies is the natural by-product of a clash of civilizations, of a universal Islamist ideology, or of fundamentalist conversion.

This book was difficult to follow. It read as if the author had the expectation that people already knows what she is talking about or at least has a lot of background on it. It interchanges some terms between Arabic and English, which is understandable but became overdone and confusing. Not the best book for a low-level class but decent.

He recalls how the Plessey vs Ferguson doctrine of 1896 and the Brown vs Education doctrine of 1954 co-existed at the same time. One law allowed African Americans to have separate but equal facilities as Whites but in 1954 the Brown vs Board of Education stated it was acceptable to go to the same schools. The book delineates the struggle his high school, the community and the Union Parish School Board had in trying to reconcile this dilemma when it was time for the senior class to graduate in 1970.

The Bilberry surname originated from White immigrants from Alabama who made their way to the rich fertile land of Union Parish, Louisiana. Most of them bought land, raised and sold crops to make their living. Many owned slaves. Slaves were valuable property to the slave owners. Many mulatto children were fathered by slave owners with the slave female. It was not uncommon for this to continue after the emancipation of the slaves. The latter is the case with Frank Bilberry. He was born circa 1878 to a former slave holder that lived near his mother's family. His white father sired several other sister and brothers other slave and former wome. The book is filled with pictures that follows along with the story of the book. It has an extensive appendix at the end of the book that includes death certificates, marriage licenses, land patents, obituaries and photographs of both white and black Bilberry's and their extended families (Honeycutts, Horn, Nelson, Bridges, Feazel, Wilhite, Warren, Burch, Ellis, Archie, Armstrong, Roberts, Robinson, Montgomery and more) of Union Parish, Louisiana. Every Family has a family story to tell but someone must be willing to tell it.

About the Author
Charles is a retired Engineering Inspection Supervisor. He was raised up in Marion, Louisiana but has resided in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1970. His educational background includes an Associate of Science degree in Drafting Technology from the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas; a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas; a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Ministry from Bethany University in Scotts Valley, California; a Master of Arts degree in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Louisiana Baptist Theological Seminary. He was an adjunct professor at Bethany University in Las Vegas, Nevada and became interested in writing his family's history while teaching church history classes and after attending several family reunions. He enjoys fishing, hiking, writing and traveling with his wife Taryn.

Black family history being told.

This is also part of my family. I loved that I was able to fill in the blanks on my family trees. he is years ahead of me but I will get there. The Roberts/Jackson families have stories to be told, also. When your parents speak of the Bilberrys in such a loving way, you get to know the family before you read the book.

About the Author
Adrian Dewey spent most of his childhood drawing cars. On leaving school he went on to study Product Design, and later Transport Design. He has taught presentation techniques and sold his artwork worldwide for a number of years. Don't buy this book...

This book is out dated... its terrible actually... I'm an industrial designer and I love books- even if you get one idea from a book its usually worth it. What you get with this book is some process on rending in marker... but for the most part- bad illustrations, terrible choice of fonts, seems a bit disorganized because there is a lack of consistency... I honestly think it sucks. The book title says how to illustrate and design. It covers illustration but when it comes to actual automotive design? forget it- I'm bummed I wasted my money on this book.

Helping Wrench Heads Understand Concept Artists

I am really enjoying this book and it's explanation of creating Concept Illustrations, from a beginners perspective. Enough Information to keep me on track without being too restrictive and limiting my own imaginative processes. I am a "Nuts and Volts" kind of guy who does CAD and has been active on Vehicle Design web sites such as The Forge. In that arena, I am surrounded by extremely good Conceptual Illustrators.This book is helping me bridge the gap between our different vehicle perspectives and how to communicate / translate my thoughts.

Must read book for any industrial designer

I'm good at sketching but always had problems colouring, if you're like me then this book is for you.

It explains the principles behind how to shade and render cars. All concepts are explained in such a general (universal) way, and are easy to apply to product design.

I got the Kindle version. I cannot recommend it enough!

A good text to start with.

The book provides a solid start for Numerical Methods, especially for those learning Matlab while having their first introductory course in Numerical Methods.

My recommendation is to read through the chapter and play with the code(the book comes with a CD with all m-files used in the book on it). If you are just learning Matlab, try changing the code to do different things and see what happens. Create an m-file or two that checks the slope across the curve created and plot a few of the arrays in the text.

The worst thing you can do with this book is try and avoid the code, even if Matlab is new and frustrating. The introductions are rather theoretical (especially for the Junior level undergraduate who is just entering or who hasn't had proofs), but if you work at it the text will make sense.

I give it four stars for the somewhat theoretical introductions, but this was my first real introduction to Matlab and Numerical Methods. I can say after working through the book it prepares you well for future mathematical work and a background in Matlab makes it easy crossover to Maple or pick up c/c++.

It's a very good book, but the code they use is very advanced programming, when the same code to complete the calculations can be written much simpler, and easier to understand.
Overall awesome book for understanding the principles but don't expect to learn matlab from it.

There are just too many typing errors which can be extremely annoying. You try to follow examples and keep getting the wrong answer only to find one of the plus signs is a minus sign and then when you look at the selected answers to see if you are doing it right it might be showing you "the solution for number 4" but you come to realize nope its actually the solution for number 5. It is a terrible textbook in my opinion.

The (hot, dirty, and consuming) games people play

Consider yourselves warned, faithful readers: CD Reiss is going to claw your heart out, pound it with a meat cleaver, only to shove it back in, wrench it back out, stomp on it with sharp spiked shoes, and then jab only half of it back in your chest, leaving the other half dangling perilously out.

Such is Marriage Games, one of the best books I've read this year.

Adam and Diana have been married four years - four happy years, Adam thought. A note on the kitchen counter one morning defies that notion, however, because Diana has left him. She is unhappy, she no longer loves him, and she wants this marriage to end.

Adam's initial shock gives way to an agonizing pain that demands action: "I needed to become a man unburdened by love. I didn't have a plan yet. I didn't have a beginning, middle, and end. Just a concept without form. I didn't articulate it to myself, but somewhere on the back burners, something started brewing. Something difficult, bold, and utterly callous."

One thing you quickly learn about Adam is that he is a Dominant, yet his marital bed was absent any D/s relationship because Adam believes it is impossible for him to love a submissive. And one thing Adam knows without question is that he loves his wife.

He also knows that he is not ready for his marriage to end.

To forestall Diana's demand for a divorce, Adam proposes an exchange: 30 days together, during which Diana will do whatever Adam asks, after which he will give her not only the divorce but the 51 percent he owns in her and her father's company.

Reiss has a running motif of cold and ice that reflects the state of this marriage. Adam has frozen part of himself off, leaving a cold void where his dominance once thrived. He refers to Diana as his "little huntress," but her mythological namesake pursues creatures whose hearts beat warm blood. What Adam can't see is that part of his heart, much like the snow drifts in Manhatten and the Hamptons, is too cold to hunt. When Adam observes that his "toe made a divot in the crust of ice but didn't break through," he might as well be talking about himself.

Yes, Adam loves his wife. You will not question this. in fact, you will agonize with him over Diana's absence. Adam professes that she is "light, life, energy. Everything." And you believe him. You know this to be true. Reiss uses this to almost turn you against Diana, to dislike her with the same intensity with which Adam loves her.

And then Reiss changes the "game," and you find yourself standing on that frozen crust of ice, feeling it crack underneath you.

This book is so amazingly well written that I am struggling with how to describe it. I have not marked up a book as I marked Marriage Games in a long, long time. When Reiss is in Adam's head, she immerses you in his thoughts and feelings, grabbing you by the jugular and not releasing you. This book will exhaust your emotional reserves in a way that very few books do, but it's a good way, in a way that makes you feel as if you just experienced something phenomenal.

Truly, the less you know about this book, the better you will be. Go into it ready to be challenged. Go into it ready to love Adam, yet also be prepared to understand him better, sometimes in ways that make you weep for him rather than on behalf of him. You also need to be prepared to rethink how you look at marriage, to see it as an organic, ever-changing entity in which two partners grow and adapt to each other's growth. You need to learn that a game can only be played by two willing participants, and not all games can be won.

As this is the first in a duet, it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Or maybe "cliffhanger" is the wrong word to use. It ends on that icy crust, and you hear the ice beginning to break. Reiss leaves you wondering if you - and Adam and Diana - will make it safely across or if the ice will tear you asunder.

Raw, Sensual Addictive

Christine Reiss has truly outdone herself with the story of Adam and Diana. She has written something so raw, emotional, sensual and addictive.

Sometimes you read a book and you feel the words on such a deep level that you literally have to take several steps back and process what you just read. This story consumed, enthralled and enraptured me. The complexity of these characters made me think and feel things that I never thought possible. I both loved and hated Adam and Diana for their flaws and shortcomings.

At times I wanted to be Diana, forced to my knees and bend to Adam's dominance. And in other moments I wanted to be Serena, who would willingly give herself to someone just to receive pain to derive the ultimate pleasure.

I felt Adam's betrayal towards Diana. At the same time understanding his deep conflict over these two parts of himself. The rawness of their feelings for each other was palpable. I was keenly aware of the letter Diana wrote to Adam, and my heart broke a little each time he sent unanswered text. I felt the cold wind of winter in Montauk blowing, and heard of crushing ice under foot.

I was truly transported while reading and I honestly don't know if I ever have before.

To say this is must read is understatement. Christine beautifully crafted this story, which to me is her best yet.

What a perfect read - everything about the Marriage Games #1 is right, right, right! But why? The story line & concept, CD Reiss' brilliant execution and some the most emotionally complex characters I've ever read. I can't even find my words...not easily at least but here goes.

I read it in one fell swoop. Why I would start a CD Reiss book in the evening and expect to put it down before I was done? What was i thinking? I just wanted...I'm not even sure what I wanted. Did I think there was an HEA in this (book 1 of a duet)? No, not at all. But still I wanted to feel hopeful for them together, not apart.

Did I think Adam was blindsided? Betrayed? Yes. I had so much sympathy for him. Diana was simply callous and unfeeling. I really didn't like her and I struggled with that because well, if Adam loved her, surely she was worthy. But she wasn't panning out that way. Then I realized there are 2 sides to the story and she really is in self preservation mode. Once the story moves to her perspective, I softened towards her a lot. And then I thought maybe there is hope. But deep down, I dreaded the past repeating itself.

The secondary characters - Stephan & Serena are great for the story line. They are reminders that there are rules in the BDSM community and considering the practice, they are incredibly important. I had an aha moment as I realized that even DOMs have hard-lines and the unique situation made Adams even more imperative. Can't say I liked either one of them though. Nope ! Lots of manipulation going in throughout the story but these two are so calculated in their efforts.

I love where it ended and how I feel - a little anxious, a little hopeful, a lotta worried ;-)
